OMGOSHNESS I WWAANNTTSS this as my phone's wallpaper. The Frizzled is my HERO. It's the model of how I taught my Kids intangibles, sciences, physics I actually took my Kids bug hunting, physical phenomena observing, and every other imaginable learning hands on, the FUN way with a purpose. Our neighbor Kids frequently followed along till we looked like a field trip class ^_^

MountainLygon In reply to Makosharkman [2013-09-12 23:38:49 +0000 UTC]
I have to finish my animation degree first...
No, seriously, I even have preliminary character designs. Β It would all be done in Flash, just like MLP. Β The biggest obstacle we face is getting licensing. Β We can recast the kids (with a few exceptions that I'd insist on remaining the same), and I'm sure Lily Tomlin would love to reprise her role. Β So it's all just a matter of getting a willing crew together and buttering up Scholastic and Joanna Cole.
My MSB reboot would be the first science edutainment series to NOT shut out people because of their differing opinions on origins--which is a worldview discussion anyway, NOT a scientific one.

Β
what do you mean?

MountainLygon In reply to Makosharkman [2013-09-23 06:41:22 +0000 UTC]
You know how all the kid's science edutainment shows get to the dinosaur episode and start with, "Millions of years ago?" Β That's their way of saying, "Ours is the only opinion that counts, and no one, not even you parents, get to tell us what to teach your kids." Β The only response parents have to that, really, is turning off the TV, and that to me is throwing out the baby with the bath water. Β So I don't want to put people in that position, and I really don't want to be put in it myself. Β If I don't believe the universe magically combusted itself into being or that dinosaurs can morph into ducks, I'm not going to let anyone make me tell kids that's what happened. Β Yet it would be equally unfair for me to present my views as if they're the only ones represented in the scientific community. Β So I would find a way to present both views on origins in a way that was fair and as neutral as possible (even though there's no such thing as true neutrality). Β Origins is a huge debate among scientists, and I want to teach kids that conflict in the scientific community is both inevitable and beneficial, if handled properly. Β Without conflict, we would not have made many of the scientific advances we take for granted today. Β Sheep make lousy scientists, yet by presenting only an evolutionary approach to science, you're doing nothing but turning children into sheep. Β Presenting one view and one view only as unquestionable truth in an endeavor that is based entirely upon questioning, exploration and going against the status quo discourages critical thinking. Β I want to encourage it, and that means showing kids where scientists sometimes butt heads.
It's not just origins, either. Β There are all kinds of controversial topics in science, many of which can easily be presented to kids in a way that's relatable and fun. Β Plus, kids learn lessons for life in not just critical thinking skills, but also in conflict management. Β If I can manage it, my version of MSB will include an aesop for every episode.
