Description Handmade Marquetry & Pyrography Holiday Card

This card is made of wood instead of paper. There are 7 different wood types used in the marquetry on this card, all hand cut into the shapes of the candle, holly & background. The outline and ferns are burned into the wood.

This card is for the wonderful deviantArt Holiday Card where artists from dA make handmade cards and send them to dA to be distributed to people in hospital who might not have any visitors over the holiday period.

Holiday Card Project 2015!
The DeviantArt #HolidayCardProject is back for its 9th year!  With the goal of bringing a bit of holiday cheer to patients in the hospital during the holiday season, the Holiday Card Project connects artists from around the world, applying their tremendous artistic abilities to designing and creating uplifting holiday cards.
In the past few years, this project has received more than 5,000 cards sent in by more than 2,000 deviants from 60 different countries/political regions. Cards are then divvied up and distributed by DeviantArt members to local Los Angeles hospitals, with additional cards given to various hospitals in the U.S. and abroad for DeviantArt volunteers and hospital staff members to hand out to patients.
The idea behind the Holiday Card Project is simple: do something nice for others. However, if you're looking for even more incentive, every deviant who sends in

Awesome! The details are amazing! O_O
How did you get the different pieces of wood together? Are they glued on top?
I know for thicker wood you'd use a router (I think? : P ), but it's baffling to me that it's possible in such a thin piece of wood! It's beautiful

Thanks so much.

An excellent question.  I used a rectangle of maple veneer as a base and then glued all of the different sections individually to the base veneer. Even with two layers it's still less than a millimeter thick.

I've actually never learnt marquetry so I don't know how it's supposed to be done, and I'm not sure if I do it the right way or not, but with thicker wood I would find that level of detail extremely difficult to obtain with a router, so for thicker wood I used a chisel to carve out a hole to the exact size and depth with a chisel. Again, I'm not sure if that's the right way to do it or not. I just kinda make things up as I go along.

Cool! Thanks so much for taking the time to explain it to me!
And Congrats on the Daily Deviation!!!! I'm new to DeviantArt so I don't know exactly what it means, but it can tell it's an important, awesome achievement you totally deserve.

My pleasure entirely.

Daily Deviations are the pictures you see on the home page of deviantArt so they get seen by lots of people. It's a great honour for me to have been nominated for one. Thank you so much.

Just telling the truth  Thank you also for the watch, kind comments and many faves.

I spent my first 15 years in England but them moved to Australia.  One of my cousins lived in Wales for a long time, but moved to Ireland last November - she says it's really beautiful.  I'd love to take my camera there one day but it's a loooong trip!

Awe shucks!

I bet that was a real culture shock to move at 15 when you had a bunch of friends in England and your whole life there, but you're probably well settled in Oz now and would find it an even bigger culture shock to go back to England.

Wales is beautiful too. I've been there twice, but only for day trips. I'd like to do a bit more exploring there at some stage.

I'm glad your cousin likes it here. What part of Ireland is she in? Well I'm biased but Ireland definitely has its beauty spots too. The scenery is not that different from Wales, though the culture is slightly different.

Oh you'd be most welcome if you came, and definitely bring your camera. There's lots to see and do.

It is a long way though, and expensive flights too. I'd love to see Australia too, except that I'm not a big fan of spiders and having seen the ones my friends saw over there  think I'm happier here!

It was rather.  I didn't want to leave that's for sure - particularly as I was half way through my 'O' Level year.  Didn't get around to going back to school once I got here either.  And yes, most definitely settled here.  My children and grandchildren are all here too, of course.

I went to southern Wales for a week with a Scout camp.  My dad was a leader so my mum and I were the only girls there.  But I fell in love with the farmer's son, who taught me to drive a tractor, and to count in Welsh from 1 - 10.  I later discovered he'd *actually* taught me to say "One tooth in a cow's head" but never mind

In all this time, since January 1972, I've seen one huntsman (massive spider) and 2 or 3 redbacks.  That's it for spiders.  But since we moved to this house 4 years ago I've had a blue-tongued lizard and a bandi-bandi snake in my garage, and a small dugite *in* my house.  If that ever happens again we'll be moving I can tell you  It's taken me a year to stop being paranoid about watching ahead of me as I walk around the house for fear of another one, but Steps Have Been Taken to shut off the dog door etc etc in the hope of preventing that

My cousin lives in Galway.  At least I can type that at a reasonable speed, she was in Aberystwyth before.

Oh wow that was a drastic transition, but you've obviously thrived and now have children and grand children there. That's wonderful.

Oh that's so funny! It sound like something from a film.

That's one spider too many!!! Even non venomous ones freak me out. As for the snakes.... wow! you should work for the Australian tourist board. You're really selling it to me!!! I actually don't mind snakes too much, but I must admit that a dugite in the house would be terrifying, and they're greyish brown so they're probably very difficult to see until the last minute.

Galway's a great place. It's got a really good live music scene and is a very upbeat place to be.   Yes definitely better to pronounce than Aberystwyth!!

how does the hinge work?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

snazzie-designz In reply to Galen-Wolfe [2015-12-08 14:20:41 +0000 UTC]

Ah... an excellent question... I lined the inside of the card with some thick paper the same colour as the wood so the hinge is paper, and then you can write a message on the inside, or in my case I designed a design for the inside and stuck in in.
