Description Pure Vector. Illustrator CS2

My vector sensei gave me a challenge. I had to come up with a vector illsutration that only used 4 colors. It really isn't as easy as it looks

I tried to come up with a 'pop-culture' iconic style of image. I decided I haven't really done much heavy emotional peices...so i came up with 'sensuality.' As for the colors, I picked 4 harmonious colors and white. I really wanted it to look vintage, I hope it does

YES...its suggestive, but oh well. I still like it

It took about 3 hours give or take a few minutes.

it's actually pretty simple. Draw the face in pencil..scan it in...open in Illustrator. Create a custom brush that tapers from one end to the other. Use the art-brush tool to ink your work. The rest is simple color fill

what is illustrator is it a certain program you use >?

Snigom In reply to DisFunkArtist [2012-06-10 13:21:31 +0000 UTC]

IT's a program that uses "vector" based graphics. Vector is mathematical representation of graphics. It's near perfect and can be blown up to the size of a mountain or shrunk to the size of a needle and it would never loose it's resolution nor pixelate. Photoshop and the other programs use "raster" based graphics. These are pixel-based. Therefore, resolution and DPI are very important in the quality of the graphic.

May I ask which brush you used for the stroke? Or did you make the outlines by tracing the lines that way by hand?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Snigom In reply to stencil-tees [2010-01-24 12:55:25 +0000 UTC]

I created the brush stroke in illustrator. Then turned it into an art brush. I scanned in a sketch i did in pencil. Then i traced it in illustrator with the new brush

it does come off vintage. genuine vintage. and i love how you only used four colors, but it doesn't look like it. and the picture looks sensual, but somehow innocent. does that make sense? fave-ing.

Nope. No model except in my mind. Though I had to sketch it out a few times to get it just right

Yeah, I almost had it down at one time, but I didn't keep at it, and I just lost the flow, I guess. And with InDesign, I seem to use that for just about everything, now.

Wow...nice work. I have been doing just that (using my imagination) for my next series. Hadn't done that in such a long, long time. So we'll see how it turns out.

Snigom In reply to odavis [2007-03-31 16:14:04 +0000 UTC]

I need to reinstall InDesign, but since none of my clients have asked me to put together a magazine layout...I really haven't had a need to use it.

"Hadn't done that in such a long, long time. So we'll see how it turns out." I have complete faith that it will.

Thanks for having faith in me! Just remember that sentiment when you see them. And pleeeeeze be gentle.

Creating fantasy art is escape-ism at its best in my opinion. And I need it very much these days. So even if they don't turn out well, it's been so much fun doing it again and in a totally different medium.

I've been noticing that you and I have some of the same love and taste in artists...it's scary! We would have been close buds if we grew up in the same neighborhood!

Vector art is always so cool. I've always been fond of the use of complementary and flat colors, and anyone who can pull it off well is pretty cool in my book ;3 It's like something you'd see in magazines, too. This is a really neat image, so I'm definitely faving it. x3
