Description My mom likes lighthouses and miniatures, so I made this as one of her Christmas presents.

(I don't have it anymore, obviously, so this is a rough guess....) The box is about 2 1/2" by 1 1/2" on top, and the bottle is about 3/4" long.

It's a lighthouse and boat with paddles on the beach. The paddles are kind of hard to see. (There are also footprints in the sand from the boat to the lighthouse, but you can't really see it here.) The lights on the lighthouse and on the box both glow in the dark.

I added the beads as an after-thought, thinking it would bring out the color of the water, but I think it did just the opposite. I filled that big blank spot on the box with a nice little golden bow. (I hadn't yet put the final finish on the box when these pics were taken.) I almost scrapped this and started all over. I was short on time and decided to try to fix it instead. I thought about adding a seagull or two, but I didn't want to mess it up again.

Made with: paper clay, Sculpey (polymer clay), liquid Sculpey or Fimo (maybe both, I don't remember), water colors, acrylic paint, super glue, the thinnest wire I've ever seen, a bottle charm, a small wooden box, cotton stuff, wood finish, clear nail polish

The water is made from TLS (Translucent Liquid Sculpey)...or maybe Liquid Fimo, not sure... tinted w/ watercolor paints and topped w/ clear nail polish.

How did you get that in there?
And where can you buy that bottle?

I used paper clay for the sand, which is air dry, so I sculpted that while it was inside the bottle. The boat and light house were baked and then put in before the paper clay dried. The water was added after all that, using liquid Sculpey/Fimo and clear nail polish.

In the past I have found the bottle charms at our local Hobby Lobby and JoAnn Fabrics. (Our Hobby Lobby stopped carrying them though, and JoAnn just got 'em.) I would say just try different craft stores in the jewelry/charm area. The makers of the bottles won't sell to consumers, even in bulk, so if you still can't find them, you can buy a "lot" of bottle charms on ebay.

I've been trying to do something of the likes of this for ages, but haven't been able to, I never thought of using liquid clay.

Good job!

Well, to make things more complex for you.... I thought I was going to scrap this one and start over so I was experimenting.

For the water I used super glue, but the problem with that is if you use too much at once the fumes leave white deposits on the inside of the bottle. So after it dried I had to scrape them off with a toothpick and use a wet paintbrush & Q-tip to get them out. (In the process I damaged the lighthouse and had to re-do parts of it.) After I fixed that, I put a thin layer of tinted liquid sculpey on top of the super glue and baked it. It gave it a nice transparent-but-with-color feel like water has, so I kept it like that.

I was thinking of doing more clay tutorials this summer. Interested?

Very! I would love some more tutorials. I am still in the process of figuring out how to do things with the clay, but I'm getting into the swing of it. Already spent around $200 on clays and accessories.

Ah so you used superglue. I made a pond-in-a-bottle and used superglue as my water, but I used too much glue at once and after a while the glue started to pull the clay apart, now it is just a semi-translucent goldfish-coloured bottle with outside decorations xP

It really depends on the type of super glue. Get the watery kind and make sure it dries clear and glossy. Those work the best and aren't as noxious as the other glues (but you still don't want to stick your face right up in the fumes). After my miss-hap with the pond, I bought like 5 different brands just to experiment with. It's usually the really cheap stuff that works well.

I don't usually use clay-specific accessories, so I can't imagine what you bought. If you go to the jewelry-making section of your craft store and look for the tiniest things you can find, I usually find a use for those things eventually. (You'd be surprised at some of the things they end up being used for.) I bought some basic clay colors and just mix them for additional colors. Acrylic paint is always good too.

I have a clay tutorial somewhere in my gallery, and I link to a couple really good basic tuts.

Oh I have a large supply of clay, but here it is $4-$5 per block. Also I simply have my stylus/ball point tools, containers, alot of jewelry-making items like hooks, earings, etc, bottles (Which I get free from my work), leather cord and connectors, and then things like clay softener and TLS.

Thanks for the tips with the glues, I'll have to try my hand at it some time soon.

Please tell me that's $4-$5 for a large block. We have 4 hobby stores (though one's going out of business - it seems most everything in town is), and they all sell it $1-$1.25 per small block.

Nope, per 56g Fimo, or 57g Sculpey.

Sometimes I can get it for $3 per Fimo blocks, but thats only when they just got a new order, and are getting rid of the last lot. We don't really have any clay-hobby stores. I have managed to find four places that sell them, which two are 'Special Art' stores, you know, the expensive art stores, that onyl sell fimo, $4.80 and $4.85 per block. Then Spotlight, that sells only Sculpey, $4 per block. And then one of the Universities have a store for their art students, which is $4.10 per block of either, and they also sell other brands that I haven't tried yet like Kato.

Spotlight and the Uni Stores, I can't get to, unless I wanna have a 1-hour-either-way trip to them.

I am very jealous of you o___x
