Description These are some of the Steampunk themed Frozen Time in a Bottle charms I make, which are also for sale in my Etsy Shop here: [link]

The "charm" inside the bottle is a sort of deconstructed clock face, artfully positioned by hand out of real, antique clock pieces, to look like the inner workings of a clock, with the hands still pointing to tell time. The bottle is about 1 and a quarter inch tall with a real cork stopper securely glued in place.

I have been getting into steampunk lately, so I decided to make a charm that's more industrial, but still has that touch of magic that I love to imbue into my work. These charms are actually quite a challenge to make, lining up all the little parts, suspended in my sparkling goo, to make it look like a little broken clock, stuck in the same time forever. I also tried something different with my photo layout, photoshopping my photos together has never been my strong point, what I really wanted to give this piece a more noir look.

These items are also currently for sale on my online store here: [link] or you can send me a note, or e-mail me at YellerCrakka@Yahoo.com if you're interested in anything.

where did you get the gears from ?

YellerCrakka In reply to KSan23 [2015-01-06 22:32:09 +0000 UTC]

They came from vintage pocket and wrist watches found at garage sales and estate sales.  I don't use any new pieces so they keep their truly antique and unique feel.

What kind of stuff did you use to suspend the gears??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

YellerCrakka In reply to DJKeala [2014-10-18 23:33:29 +0000 UTC]

I generally use resin now for most of my bottle charms.

Resin? Okay I have some pretty good ideas but I'm not sure what supplies I need for some stuff. Thanks for the help!

How did you keep it from sinking to the bottom of the bottle??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

YellerCrakka In reply to SilverSunfire [2014-02-20 00:22:37 +0000 UTC]

The resin inside hardens almost solid, so it's not a liquid and the items stay put.

Oh. You let it cure almost fully? Ok that makes sense, thanks

Where do you get those mini gears? From the Hobby Lobby? And how do you keep the bubbles spaced out evenly in the bottles?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

YellerCrakka In reply to XxAnimeWolfxX [2012-05-23 05:40:29 +0000 UTC]

I actually get the gears online from real antique watches, I personally don't use mass produced replica gears to keep the piece more authentic, and the bubbles just form naturally as I pour the resin in, it just takes practice to get a feel for it when you mix the liquid beforehand, slowly mixing it right until the end helps.

XxAnimeWolfxX In reply to YellerCrakka [2012-05-29 01:30:08 +0000 UTC]

Oh, okay. Thanks, I've made some of my own, but the bubbles always disappear.

Excuse me, I know you probably get asked this a lot but where do you find the vegan gelatin, and dose it ever dry out? I would use some sort of glue but I am the type of person who almost super glues their fingers together or to the object I am trying to repair.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

YellerCrakka In reply to moviephandom [2012-01-21 02:58:12 +0000 UTC]

You can get vegan gelatin at specialty health food stores usually, like Whole Foods, or it can be ordered on the internet. But it can dry out over time, which is why I use resin more nowadays, but it's quite involved so I don't usually recommend it to casual crafters as it can be dangerous.

Excuse me, I want to know, what do you use to suspend the pieces? I mean, the thing you call 'sparkling goo' or 'bubbling goo' or whatever... Is it some sort of transparent plastic or some like that? I would like to make some fake aquarium using that kind of mat but I can not find out what is it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

YellerCrakka In reply to Schwanensee [2011-11-27 23:44:15 +0000 UTC]

I use vegan gelatin for small items like this, but if you're trying to make something bigger like an aquarium, you should probably use resin, which is indeed like a transparent plastic.

These are amazing :') What did you use as the liquid in the bottle?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

YellerCrakka In reply to DocileGloom [2011-10-26 05:43:54 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, and it's a sort of vegan gelatin rather than a true liquid.

It's really nice!
But....How where can you get goo that holds it in place?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

YellerCrakka In reply to systemdownfall [2011-08-14 02:18:58 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, and you can use lots of different things for the goo, like glue, oil, or vegan gelatin mixtures.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

systemdownfall In reply to YellerCrakka [2011-08-14 02:23:56 +0000 UTC]

Wait, do the gears MOVE?
And do you mind listing the materials? When Im near a craftstore and have time to kill I would like to attempt to make a very unique and amazing item like this. You have alot of talent.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

YellerCrakka In reply to xNeonVeins [2011-06-20 22:19:52 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately they don't move, so sorry! That would be awesome if they did though. ^_^ And the necklace is just made with a small bottle that can be ordered online from sites like eBay or Etsy, then antique clock pieces I gather from old watches at thrift stores or supplement with pieces you can also buy online at those same sites, and the goo is made of vegan gelatin, but you can use clear gel glue for a similar look.

Cant you also use Baby Oil? And thank you for responding. Yeah, it would need a motor or something for them to move.
