How did you catch the breath?
It was a cool but sunny day. Combined with the dark background, the sunlight was enough to light up any mist to make it show up. The background was their shelter in the shade, but looks dark to the camera compared to the bird.
If you're in the area, I would definitely recommend visiting the Hawk Conservancy Trust where you can not only get a similar photo yourself, but they also run some spectacular flying displays.

Ohhh, I love that you can see its breath! It's also cool how this photo is made of darks and lights so that it's almost black and white except for that bright yellow bill and the eagle's eye. Eye-catching and beautiful

Great photo, and congrats on the DD. The great detail captured is awesome and I love the back lighting. I always imagined their call to be like that of the red tailed hawk they sound nothing like they look

I feel bad that I didn't comment on this earlier, but I must say, of all the eagle pictures I've seen, this is one of the most breathtaking I've seen yet! I really love how the sunlight outlines the eagle's figure against the contrastingly darker background... there's an air of clarity and radiance about it that I can't shake off, and the steam eddying from its beak only contributes to the photo's splendour.... it's beautiful. ^_^

The camera as well as some settings are included on the deviation page. In this case I used a Canon 7D but this type of shot could be done with many types of camera.

Beautiful bird, I once saw two of them near a public access lake last year. It was an amazing experience to actually see wild eagles.
