Featuring Vesta
Summer, Year 1996 of the New Generation
Linx x Austerian Border

Vesta had surpassed "bored" weeks ago. Now she was somewhere close to losing her mind.

It wasn't often that the crimson hind complained. Complaining was a habit reserved almost exclusively for cowards and indolent fools. As she would classify herself under neither of these, and would happily tear out the throat of anyone who thought it wise to disagree with her self-analysis, Vesta knew she really shouldn't be whining. Even internally. But for a year now she had been a Raven, and by all possible ways of seeing it, she should be somewhere deep in the mountain ranges that taunted her from the edges of the forest where she could actually put her magic to some good use. Instead, she was stuck in the middle of nowhere, and the only life she could detect was an oversized toad.

She snorted, golden eyes locking on the forest as she stood knee-deep in a pool, letting the water soothe her tired legs. She still wasn't entirely sure if she was there to make sure no one entered Austerian territory or if she was there to keep anyone from leaving it. She wouldn't be surprised if rumours had spread far enough for the Austerians to have heard about their princess' escape - and thought they might be able to offer some kind of assistance to her. She would, however, be shocked if some idiot actually made it through the Shadows guarding the forest riffraff.

A promising Raven, confined indefinitely to border patrol. Nice.

Her ear flicked as she waited, though she really wasn't sure what she was waiting for. If the fighting had started, surely word would come soon-

The forest shuddered with stomping hooves, the water rippling around her. They were heavy footfalls, thudding quickly into the packed earth and coming closer - from the mountains, not to them. So not a vapid hero. Good. Just one body, two at most. Not a herd of elk. Her interest peaked, but still she did not move.

It could just be a Linx on the run, she reasoned, but even then, a kitty-cat would be worth questioning. Certainly it wasn't a full evacuation. The Linxes would know better than to head for the forests, and it was unlikely that just one would get so far ahead. Certainly not another retreat from the Shadows; otherwise, the beating of hooves would be accompanied by the flap of wings and the hiss of claws on stone. Even as the thundering steps continued to approach, she didn't so much as twitch a muscle.

The thick underbrush parted, and there was a splash as hooves slid and water sprayed everywhere. She wasn't sure if the stag was more surprised by the sight of her or the sudden cold.

"Yes?" She asked, sounding surprisingly pleasant. Maybe because the Shadow - for he could be nothing else, with the raven feather braided into his matted mane - was far enough away that he hadn't splashed her too.

"I -" there was a string of curses. It did nothing but try her patience. "We've broken through one of the tunnels. I was sent to-" Whatever came after that, Vesta didn't care. The rest was a muffled stream, only three words standing out in the blur: "spare some fighters."

Only then did she finally emerge from the pool, fangs glistening as she pulled on all her self-restraint to say, "I'll walk you to the Woods."

Hopefully, the Queen would leave her a teddy bear to sink her teeth into. It was the least Her Highness could do for leaving her on border patrol.
