Ok, so I REALLY hate Fan-Art...It's not ALL bad, some is very good actually, but I HATE the fact that it's ALL people want to see!
I'm only putting this drawing up because it took forever and I'm kinda proud of it.
And would someone please inform me how on EARTH this racks up 100+ pageviews almost everyday?!?
Seriously, someone, tell me.

Yea, people like fanart alot. Thats all I draw.
I don't like the fact all I draw is fanart and dragons, I should make my own original characters but thats very difficult for a person like myself.

Yes, fan art can actually have some stress-relief (I just found it helps me unbottle when I'm in a creative jam).
But really, making characters can be simple.
I started by taking bits and pieces from other characters I liked, put them together with my own style and viola.

I had a really hard time with all the shadows on his face, and I wasn't sure if it turned out alright or not.
Yeah, some people tried to lable me a hypocrite, but SOME fanart is fine...some if it is quite beautiful actually. And when it comes to real people...the fanart line gets a bit...blurred.
Since, what's the difference between a portrait and a piece of fanart? Who draws the line on that?

On the outside it doesn't really make a difference. Because when I don't know *insert random famous person or character here* and I'll see a piece of fanart about gis or her, I probably won't notice it's fanart.
But when you only post fanart and especially when the person/character has already tons of fanart pieces here on dA, it's different.

yeah, I definately agree with that. The only reason I put up this particular drawing of Criss Angel was because I thought I had done a decent job on it.
If I hadn't, I wouldn't have, no matter how many favorites it would have landed me.

In a way you could say that
BUT... Criss Angel isn't a character drawn and copyrighted by someone else.
And it is technically more of portrait...if we went by THAT rule, than portrait artists would be fan artists too.

It's really nicely drawn and inked. The arms and legs look a bit too small for his body, though. He's only five heads tall in this picture, when it should be closer to seven or eight. yeah, I drew it off of a picture that was pretty dark and had this weird background...
His legs were supposed to be bent a bit more...maybe the big paper I used just confused me =/

Its good except for the arms,..they anatomy of the arm is good, but they look too small, a little out of proportion.

Yeah, it wouldn't be too bad if people didn't come here just for fan art. >.< that and the snapshots. Ugh, if you took a crappy photo with your phone then put it in photobucket or myspace... not here. Not unless you've done something to the photo.

Ugh, that's cause too many people want to be 'artists.' I can't draw well, i admit it. But... i'm a very casual artist, mostly i write. But at least all the art i submit doesn't have blue lines and is inked. *sigh* and never fan art... i understand showing appreciation to something you like, but only doing fan art is annoying.
Sorry you got a lot of scathing comments... my sister is running a competition to get fan art of her characters- and one of mine- and i can advertise your account if you wish. The people who keept to their morals here on DA need more views!

yeah, if I do fan art, I try and make it some seriously wicked fanart from a totally new angle and perspective...not just the same old, same old.
But most I don't put up. I just draw it for the hell of it.
Fanart contest of characters? Yeah, if you could throw my account name out there I'd really appreciate it. ^^ Yeah, people with original characters need more respect...and with fanart, I'd rather see a well-attempted original character that may not be the best than an exact duplicate of someone elses stuff any day.

Yeah! Like, when i'm just practicing i might sketch out a character from a manga, but really I'll never post those. I like when people make their own original characters better! And like, i do writing and yet everything that gets faved is always fan art, so i have no chance >.< Anyway, i'll toss your name around.

Though, my new phone does have a 2MP camera on it, with some pretty snazzy functions...(though it's nothing compared with my LOVE, my 10MP BABY)

My camera phone is great if i need quick evidence, but that's about all. And going to the front page to see about three cameraphone shots of people- at least one of which is slutty- is really annoying. Who can't throw on some slutwear and take a snapshot? *sigh*

Based on vocal talent, many bands would not be as popular as they are.
HIM is amazing, but having Bam back them was probably what got them to be a house-hold name. HIM's talented enough, Bam just provided...advertising.

Vocal talent means quite a lot, if the musical arrangement is outstanding, but the vocalists can't sing, the group goes nowhere.
Bam provided advertising, that much is true, but advertising won't work if the product (or band in this case) being pushed has no talent.

I don't know... Fall Out Boy's first album is pretty sucky in my opinion...
And there are lots of mainstream artists that aren't nearly as good as some bands.
It's also media appeal...if Ville wasn't the pretty boy that he is...well, that's difficult advertising a band that plays love songs with an ugly lead.

Humans are indeed shallow creatures by heart, that much is true...
But Ville's voice is outstanding (in spite of all his smoking); if he wasn't pretty, sure he would lose support, but I think in many cases the image follows the fame.
Fall Out Boy was underground for quite a long time. It took forever for them to become popular with "Sugar, We're Going Down".
