A paint study (that has a dozen things still wrong with it but I must stop picking it over). I posted a WIP on my tumblr soaps.tumblr.com/post/48134380β¦ if anyone cares to see![Edited in June] One of her eyes was sagging below her other one and that bugged me all this time. And then that cascaded into another edit because the new eye placement elongated the face too much. And after that her lip looked weird. ffffff

*Lackshmana gifted me with Udon's Art of Capcom , which is chock-full of awesome painted styles that I wanted to try. Chose to use Ghost in the Shell characters since I just finished re-watching the series while working on a whooole lot of jobs.
I drew Motoko three years ago at kinda the same angle - neat to be able to compare them:

Wow, so much of my mind was blown looking at this piece. This is just absolutely beautiful. There's so much expression in this piece and seeing how you put a new spin on Motoko is even more compelling. She's portrayed as a more tougher, masculine character, and I feel like it fits with her personality a lot! This is just amazing, I love it.

I really like everything but motoko's face, which kind of looks like something happened and it's size and placement got confused. I say this because it really looks like you had the talent to avoid it.

Yeah, I think I noted in the description that there was a lot wrong with the picture as it was a quickie - if I had the time back then, her face would have been one of the many things further refined. Thanks!

Glad you liked Batou! His features are so caricatured and recognizable that it's clear where lines go. I wanted to give the Major the kind masculinity you kind of see in the first film, but there's still a delicacy involved that was taking too long to refine for a quick digital-paint study. Ah well!

Hahah, oh god it *is* difficult to follow, especially in the first season where it got crazy with its emphasis on politics over memorable bad guys (I can't for the life of me remember the main antagonist's name in that season...he was a politician I think?). But maaan, there's just such a kickass mood for the show's world and subtlety about its characters. <3

I especially love how you captured their features so perfectly without immitating the style of the series or movies.
The Major looks spot on perfect, and you captured her femininity and strength flawlessly.
Lesser artists tend to draw such overly sexualized and unrealistic female faces, and you managed to avoid that entirely while retaining a stark beauty that fits the character to a tee.

Your current version really has so much more of your style and flair. There's a toughness to her that's probably getting associated w/ masculinity which I absolutely have no problem with given what I know of her. Oh and your Batou is EPIC. The dude might as well just step out of the picture.

Ain't having it all on Netflix awesome? I have both seasons but man if it isn't a pain to change DVDs, so I looove the instant queue. Looking forward to a GitSy future where we can simply download it all into our brains!

I think you captured Batou well and I love the colour. But I'm afraid to say I don't think you captured Motoko very well in this piece 
(I also preferred the version without the tachikoma!

I see what you mean but I prefer it with, it's so boring with just their floating heads and the city is rough and unrealistically stylized anyway.
The Major is certainly not as girly as her SAC counterpart, but I always found her to have an imposing and tougher face in the original film.
