Description The chonchon is a funny bird. In fact, it’s not so much a bird as the detached head of a wizard, using its massive ears to propel it through the air on moonless nights. (Doesn’t that seem a little bit obscene?)

For Ryan Durney’s "Birds of Lore" book.

I've been wondering what your style was but I couldn't find out. Your drawings are really inspiring and full of creativity!

Beautifully done. Nice weird subject matter that belies the exquisite, decorative finish. I once heard a story of a type of vampire whose head can fly off too attack people. Curious. Only the other day, meanwhile, I was thinking how odd it is that no creature has evolved to fly with its ears. Some people have an atavistic ability to flap their ears, but generally our ancestors lost this ability when they got more mobile necks, so didn't need to turn their ears about to hear things.

You know, I read somewhere that anyone can learn to flap or wiggle their ears voluntarily: you have to figure out which muscles are responsible for moving the ears, then learn to flex them on command. I've tried this quite a few times, but I've never achieved more than a sad little twitch. I think it takes a lot of practice and determination. And, really, who's going to put that kind of effort into such a pointless exercise? Still...I do kind of wish I could flap.

The sort of people who train horses to walk sideways, I suppose.

I think thereis some kind of vampire i remember reading about that does something similiar, it detaches the top half of it's body and flies off leaving the bottom half. Very Creepy

Have I mentioned before that your drawing style reminds me of Harry Clarke?
Because it does, in the most wonderful way [link]

I've been hearing a lot of that, lately, which is good, because I've been using Harry Clarke's work for inspiration on my last several drawings. I really like his liberal use of ink, and his attention to texture and detail.

Thanks!

You're welcome!
Clarke is one of my favourite illustrators, so I recognized the style. I think you're definitely on par with him, in terms of the intricacy and level of detail in your drawings - the amount of work you put into it is amazing!

Makes me think of the Japanese folktale of goblins that look like ordinary people, but at night their heads detach from the bodies and go roving for whatever they can eat...
