Sanya's a naturally self-assured and outspoken person, never the one to doubt himself or his actions. Regardless of what he does, he always believes things will turn out well for him in one way or another. It's not just a belief though, as he regularly goes out of his way to ensure he's correct, even if it's through less than savory means. On the other hand, Sanya despises being wrong about anything and will defend himself until the bitter end, or at least until he starts claiming he was actually in the right all along and that the other person misunderstood him. He will try to lie and decieve his way out of anything, to the point it's become a compulsion of his.
Sanya absorbs information like a sponge. He can remember almost anything, whether it's dates, facts, or random things that happen around him. If he seems to forget a birthday - he didn't, he just doesn't give enough shit about that person to prepare a gift. At the same time if anyone ever slights him, he won't forget it easily. He's capable of holding grudges for years on end until he finally feels like he got enough retribution to forgive. However Sanya doesn't extend that kind of attitude towards himself, and is genuinely confused and frustrated when others want to hold him accountable for things he's done.
Though Sanya isn't the most empathetic individual, it doesn't mean he's not capable of compassion. He genuinely enjoys the company of people he considers friends and would help them in any way he can. He simply prioritises his own needs over the needs of others, but he's still willing to do things without an immediate personal gain to him. He's especially lenient on giving away money, mainly because he has so much of it that he's not entirely aware of its actual value.

Sanya was born in Dracmount City after his father moved there from northern Sinnoh. Both of his parents were heavily involved in Pokemon League business, his father being a trainer educator and a former pokemon trainer himself, and his mother being in a managing position of the Isshoan branch of the League. That's not to mention all the other companies they were overseeing, steadily bringing in vast amounts of income.
Ever since he could remember, Sanya was taught to be the perfect heir - professional, well-mannered, intelligent, strong, a prodigy in every way they could think of. He had numerous tutors come in every day of the week, taking up most of the time he could have spent having fun like a child should. At the time, he didn't question anything, he simply thought such a strict regimen was completely normal. That was until he started attending school. It was a private school, of course, but even then Sanya could feel like he stuck out from the rest. The whole class was going over things he had already learned a long time ago, and during breaks all the kids would talk about things he never had the chance to experience. Whenever he would bring that up to his parents, they would simply pat his head and tell him to keep doing a good job.
As years went on, Sanya became more and more unruly. Being so ahead of everyone in his studies caused him a lot of boredom, which soon led to him being disruptive in an attempt to keep himself interested. After the first time his parents were called, he quickly caught on that he could lie to their faces and get out of trouble whenever he wanted. This only emboldened him further, as he would actively bully others and break things, just to see if he could get some other reaction, or if his parents would ever catch on. They didn't.
That was until Sanya's grades started slipping. His parents were furious and wouldn't accept any excuses. The punishment he recieved was severe, disproportionate to the thing he's done. It all finally clicked for him. His parents only care about him not as a person, but as a success for them. He started to feel resentful, and instead of improving in his studies, he improved in deceit. Cheating, hiding, lying, he excelled in all the wrong places. At the same time he started making friends with bullies from other classes, further cementing his beliefs as he compared his upbringing to theirs. When others were playing and having fun, he was forced to become an ideal version of himself. He felt like he had lost something he never knew he could have had.
Sanya's resentment only escalated as he reached the age he could start training pokemon. He saw how his parents treated those creatures like objects, a means to an end, a success for them to achieve. They were treated just like he was. He couldn't stand by and do nothing, so he did the only thing he was confident in - decieve. He would secretly let pokemon escape and then claim they ran away on their own or that they died in a fight. Unfortunately for him, his parents would start catching on and becoming more strict towards both him and the creatures he was meant to train. At that point all he could do is bide his time until he could bring it all to an end.
A week after Sanya's sixteenth birthday his parents were caught in a freak accident. The building they were holding a meeting in was burned to the ground, the meeting room locked with no way out. Foul play was suspected, but no culprit was ever found. Sanya didn't seem to care. After gaining a massive inheritance, he left his home to travel around Issho and let himself be free. During that time he was finally able to think more about who he was and wanted to be, rather what others expected him to be, forming how he expresses himself, gender-wise and all. At the same time his spite towards his parents, and by extention the League, kept growing more and more as he learned more about it. He realised the issues spread much further than just his own family, so when he happened to hear someone mention Team Zephyr, he was immediately interested in their offer.
