That's pretty sad. I loved the imaginative pictorials they used to do. Girls that were sexy without being raunchy. I fondly remember a pictorial they did when I was just a lad depicting the over-abundance of news print and how we'd end up making clothing and furniture and other stuff from it. The girl in the newspaper bikini was a cutie.
Little did they know that eventually most news services wouldn't even have a print version.

Magazine readership is down in general so while I get trying to broaden your target market. Problem is, Playboy is such and iconic brand associated with sexuality, I just don't how possible it is.

Maxim seems like it's doing well, and it's more or less the same theory without the nudity. Pretty girls not wearing much with news articles interspersed between. So one would assume that Playboy could keep going just the way they always had. So it leaves me curious about what's going on that they feel the need to make such a radical change.

I think part of their problem was their demographic was aging too. I think that was part of the thinking. Going younger.

I can't imagine that taking out the pretty girls would help them draw in a younger crowd. If anything what they needed to change would be the staff writers who needed to write articles that would interest a younger crowd.

Still have the pretty girls, just with mostly clothed now... It was a realization that they couldn't compete with internet porn so better to clean up the image for more general market appeal. Its a worldwide brand with interest in addition to the mag, so we'll see if it works. I've softened my negativity a bit on the move, but still not completely sold it will work.

Playboy is a perfect example of something outliving its original purpose. Instead of going out on a high note, they're going out with a whimper and cringe-inducing stories about staph-infected hot tubs.
