Synopsis: "Elena's family is turned to stone."

Elena Of Avalor takes plenty of cues from its sister series Sofia The First in developing the characters while still standing on its own merits, like right here. This episode involves Mateo being honored during a ceremony for his wizardry. However, an evil wizard named Fiero turns everyone except Elena, Mateo, Naomi, and Gabe into stone statues in order to claim a magical artifact, which Mateo must retrieve in order to defeat him. The best character in the episode is pretty much Mateo. The episode does bring up an interesting conflict for him. He wants to live up to his grandfather's legacy, but has a hard time maintaining his confidence to do so. Admittedly, you can tell the moral involves self confidence and not living in someone else's shadow, but it works since we actually see his resourcefulness helping everyone, which is impressive. The world building elements and the overall atmosphere put the episode into my good graces.
