Synopsis: "Mickey tells scary stories."

Since we had a successful Christmas special, I guess Paul Rudish’s team wanted to capitalize on that success with a Halloween special. Boy does it deliver. Let’s see why by going into more detail. This episode has Mickey, Donald, and Goofy watching over the respective nephews of the former two on Halloween. To cap off the night, Mickey wants to tell scary stories to the nephews. One story involves Goofenstein and Duckgor trying to revive a monster, who’s revealed to have the ability to dance. The second story has Van Moussing and his partners going to a castle to kill Dracula, but he gets bitten. The third story is about a group of brothers who steal treats from people in a village, and their gluttony gets the best of them when an old woman captures them, and bakes them into pies. The nephews are not that impressed with the first two stories, but are terrified by the third one. This episode is definitely a loving homage to classis horror stories, with the proper escalation from spooky yet terrifying to downright terrifying. It is glorious. What sells it for me though is Mickey’s character arc. The whole point of the episode is to prove how scary he is to the nephews, but the first story is seen as too silly considering the buildup while the second one is seen as anticlimactic. I like his character is stretched to his limits by making him geeky, but not a complete wuss. It fits his character given that he’s a guy who, try as he may to please kids, does not fully get them. If there’s something to take away, it’s too never go too far in trying to impress someone. I’d say this is a nice Halloween treat.
