Synopsis: "The gang must work with Vincent Van Ghoul to find the 13th ghost."

So, The 13 Ghosts Of Scooby Doo stands out as the first Scooby Doo series to have an overarching story, paving the way for what Mystery Incorporated would do 25 years later. Now we have a movie to this series to wrap up things, in a definitely unconventional manner. Spoilers will be heavy here. This is "Scooby Doo And The Curse Of The 13th Ghost".

The movie starts with the gang accidentally trapping Farmer Morgan when someone else was responsible for wanting to shut down his business, and are told to stop mystery solving before they face serious legal repercussions when they turn 18. They then sell their stuff and come across Vincent Van Ghoul's crystal ball , saying that he's found the 13th Ghost. After filling in Fred and Velma, they head to the Himalayas to stop Asmodeus from releasing all 13 ghosts , but they need to find the chest before he does.

This movie tackles a very powerful message on not letting your mistakes, trauma, and emotion define who you are. What helps sell this is how much of a big part everyone plays.

Daphne, Scooby, and Shaggy : Given the events of the series, I will talk about all three of them here . Daphne essentially takes up the mantle as the leader, and she is awesome. She's focused, determined, quick on her feet, and kicks quite a bit of butt. Her main flaw comes from being secretive. While very open hearted to the concerns of others, she also hid the truth of real monsters from them, and tries hiding any trace of what happened so Shaggy and Scooby won't be traumatized. Heart is what keeps them likable. While still strict, Daphne does take great measure to make sure they can still get through these events, which is actually very nice . For all their cowardice , the fact they actually stick with the group is admirable.

Fred, Velma , and Flim Flam : Let's talk about Fred, Velma , and Flim Flam. The former two react very differently to this news. With Daphne taking the lead, Fred doubts his place in the group dynamic, feeling useless. Velma is in denial, thinking that it's all a hoax. She eventually breaks down upon the realization of real ghosts. What makes their arcs work is that Fred has a more internal conflict due to not being used to playing second fiddle , while Velma feels like she can't do good when real monsters are loose. Flim Flam acts like the mediator. He's sneaky and shifty, but you can definitely tell he wants to stop this demon. It also helps that he also supplies the physical means to do so, making great use of his survival skills.

Vincent Van Ghoul: Oh Vincent Van Ghoul definitely helps make the movie. He's still as mysterious and charming as ever, and has a pretty strong backstory. He and his friend Mortifer were catching all the demons when he gets taken away by ghosts during a diversion. Vincent deeply regrets this. We're not done yet . He's a descendant of the Van Ghoul family tree, wanting to live up to the standards they stand for. Wow!

Now we talk about Asmodeus. He's sadistic. He's creepy, manipulative , and preys on the fears and insecurities of his victims.

Now, I should talk about the ending, where the base gets broken. It turns out that Asmodeus is actually Mortifer , who is skilled in illusions. He was seemingly captured, yet was actually trying to profit off the story surrounding the Chest Of Demons. This heavily hints at the entirety of the previous series' demons merely being illusions. What do I think? It's definitely a lot to digest, but I don't mind the ambiguity here. Here's why.

The scene I mentioned comes after another scene. Vincent traps himself in the castle trapped by snow while the rest of the gang escapes so no one gets harmed. Everyone is down, but then Fred gives a big speech as a cheer. He figured out his purpose as someone who suppprts others when they're down. He appeals to Velma by saying that she shouldn't let her breakdown stop her from delivering justice. He appeals to Daphne by telling her that she has the heart of a leader. He appeals to Shaggy and Scooby by telling them that they may be cowards , yet still have common sense. This inspires them to come up with a plan to get the chest.

Now let's cut to after the trap. Mortifer gets arrested for his crimes, though they don't confirm or deny if the ghosts were real or illusions . Velma is still skeptical on the supernatural, even letting Vincent think that the spirit is at rest, though at least has the foresight to not open the chest, showing her restraint. Fred and Daphne still set out to solve mysteries with the gang despite their mistakes. Their altruistic desire to still solve mysteries is what strengthens the movie for me, making this easily worth watching in my eyes.

Here is the cast for the movie.

Frank Welker as Scooby Doo, Fred Jones

Grey DeLisle Griffin as Daphne Blake, Mrs. Malvo

Matthew Lillard as Shaggy Rogers

Kate Micucci as Velma Dinkley

Maurice LaMarche as Vincent Van Ghoul, Bernie Alan, Vance Linklater

Noshir Dalal as Flim Flam, Benny

Nolan North as Asmodeus, Mortifer, Farmer Morgan

David Herman as Sheriff

Whenever Mortifer was talking with his Peter Lorre accent all I could picture was Dr N.Gin from Crash.
