Description I've decided to get to know colors better and I'm starting with blue. "Getting to Know Colors" - journal

It's far from perfect but I've already learned so much about mixing blue paint. While painting this I realised that the squirrel probably should have been darker or in some other way stand out a little more. The blue colors don't harmonize as well together as I had hoped either - but that's exactly why I'm doing this!

Lately I've wanted to try something new. I want to incorporate some more details in my work and spend more time on each painting. This painting is pretty small; the painted area is about 7cm x 7cm, so it might not be as detailed as I want my paintings to be in the future but I think it worked out pretty well.

I'm really new in watercolors. I've only used watercolor/inks to do background washes before I've never tried actually painting with them. That's something I'm giving a go too!

I have a habit of trying too many new things at the same time - I really should get better at focusing on one thing at the time

I think you did a great job with the mushrooms and the more greeny leaves
Indeed, the squirrel could have been darker but I think it's more a matter of contrast with the other colors.
Have you ever tried gouache ? I forgot if you were using that technique for your previous works ? I'm thinking that because another great exercise I think would be to work with unique colors and no shades. How to explain... Like, you paint your branches with one tint of blue, then your squirrel with another tint, then let's say 3 more tins for all your leaves etc, with with shadows watsoever or very few. That way, in order to have constrast and be able to tell elements from each others, you would have to really have clear different kinds of blue.
I don't if it's clear
But anyway, I don't want to talk too much, it has to be also your own experience and your own discovery ^^
One last thing : don't hesitate to use brown and yellow to mix with your blue

And keep up the good work ! I feel you're on good tracks

I do paint with gouache - I've used a tiny bit of white on this painting. Ahh! I get it! Yes! It would probably be a good idea to try that and see how everything works together. Thank you so much for taking your time and explaining this to me
I'll get better at being bolder with the colors I mix with. These are mostly blues mixed with greens and a little brown actually. But it's only two colors mixed with eachother I haven't yet tried mixing three colors togehter. I feel like that's a bit of a mouthful here at the start. I also need to be a little bolder and try and mix with other colors too. I made a little color mixing chart and loved the colors that came out of blue and red - mostly blue and a little red. Just beautiful shades!

Thank you so much for your encouragement and guidance!

So cute I love the branch details and the mushrooms! I think you're right about the squirrel needing to be darker but wonderful job overall, especially considering the size.

If I were practicing blue colour I'd try to use warmer blue for the squirell or the closest leaves ^^
But it's great anyway, keep on practicing
