He seems to have just finished a mission that gives him great relief. It's like he's climbing out of a cage or pit as if the metal represents something that been holdiing him back. He's contiued within this thing (whatever it may be) to look towards the future and move on though the rough patchj until he finally found a way out.

I love it.
