Description For those of you who think I neglect Alistair, a bit of Alistair fangirlism here...

Let's see... My character couldn't be meaner to poor Alistair. She broke with him just after their first night together. She made him king. She forced him to marry Anora. She spared Loghain. And even after that, I had the feeling he still loved her (he even called him "My love" sometimes in the Alienage, surely when he though she couldn't hear him ). So here's a hardened Alistair, after his forced wedding, stealing one last kiss before she leaves forever. I know. Very in a sitcom in the line of "Friends" style. But I always thought my strips where a DragonAge Sitcom (has anyone noticed the subtitle in all of them?) so it is appropiate after all.

And no, Zevran is not even bothered. Why should him? He knows Alistair is going to receive one of Yllwenn's infamous "Under the waist/Dirty fighting" combos as soon as she gets out of her shock, and in the meanwhile, he can piss Anora's off. So he's happy.

Even if it is as unfinished as all my strips, I like how it looks. I put a bit of love in the drawing myself

And there's a reference to one of my favourite movies too! Anyone caught it?

Thanks!!!

I've learnt not to hate Anora, actually I respect her, but I can understand people hating her as they hate her father. I didn't hate Loghain either... but my warden did, because of what he did with the elves at the alienage...

misi-chan In reply to SoniaCarreras [2010-06-29 11:32:44 +0000 UTC]

SoniaCarreras In reply to misi-chan [2010-06-29 11:56:28 +0000 UTC]

SoniaCarreras In reply to misi-chan [2010-06-30 12:06:39 +0000 UTC]

¡Y putas! XD.

SoniaCarreras In reply to Epantiras [2010-06-28 10:35:12 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I didn't want the Sitcom to be very noticeable anyway. At first I focused most of the strips on romanceable situations, that's why I put the subtitle. Now it's in my template and I like to have it here even if nobody notices it.

And when I first met the characters, I thought Alistair was a bit of Luke Skywalker and Zevran a Han Solo - later I saw many differences (I actually can't stand Han Solo while I love Zevran) but I still like to compare them. The Spanish word "canalla" goes so well with Zevran!!!

I'm happy you liked it!!!

ChristiVivar [2010-06-27 05:13:03 +0000 UTC]

I'm going, what I might think, is a controversial ending. I wasn't happy with my first play-through but not because of what one might think. To sum it up: City-elf -> Unhardened Alistair -> Made King/Got Dumped -> DR -> Became Chancellor. Now, at first I was upset at the obvious (I actually reloaded because I "accidentally" did the US thinking that Morrigan's sly smile meant she would get her way anyway. I think it should have happened like that but not without prerequisites first) but as the days, weeks and months went by I realized I, besides the not hardening Alistair thing (didn't know about it, would have done it automatically if the conversation tree wasn't so awkward), that that ending didn't make sense for my character. Why would a city-elf with no kind of formal education in politics take up such a powerful role AND do it well that "everyone knew who the real ruler was?" That bugged me to no end among other things. Even without my meta-gaming knowledge, I knew in my heart of hearts that he would take care of my people, what I didn't know is that his kindness didn't stop with my people alone. So if I knew that, wouldn't my PC who loves Alistair dearly and trusts him so that in an alternate reality, when she was heartbroken and confused she outright denied Morrigan's offer of the DR that got her beloved killed?! Yes, yes I think she would.

I other news, I talk to much. Back to you Sonia.

SoniaCarreras In reply to ChristiVivar [2010-06-28 10:45:02 +0000 UTC]

I must admit I cheated. I did read all the walkthroughs I could. After watching my husband play, I wanted to get the best possible ending for my character, including the fact that I had chosen to keep Zevran as a lover since my husband's PC had kept Alistair (I started to love Zevran as long as I was knowing him better, at first it was just a cold decission, LOL). But I think it got even better than I expected... maybe they were bugs, but they were lovely bugs - making you feel even poor Alistair cared and loved my character was so nice and romantic. Bioware did it quite well there.

My character didn't care about ruling herself, she even rejected the bannorn of the Alienage in behalf of Shianni. But I don't think formal education is so important to rule. You must have a special predisposition for that and the game suggests your character is a natural leader. So maybe she could have people to help her at formal aspects of ruling, while she took all the decissions with her cunning. I don't think it's so illogical.

Hardening Alistair is difficult unless you already know it is possible so I guess almost nobody does it in their first playthrough. Same with Leliana. Good blesses Walkthroughs

And I love when you talk too much because you tell a lot and I love reading from you

ChristiVivar In reply to SoniaCarreras [2010-06-29 00:08:22 +0000 UTC]

LoL! Thanks! At least someone likes my wall of text!

Even though I beat the game once and am slowly making my way through my second play through (when I'm not bombarded with work) I still feel like I'm cheating or I'm not being honest in my gaming. We have a rule in our house: no walkthroughs or cheats until you've beaten the game at least once (admittedly I did look one thing up; don't tell the hubby ) but it still feels like I am cheating. I guess it's because of the nature of the game. The different origin stories and the slight differences between them after the beginning that makes me feel like I'm learning too much about a game I truly haven't completed as I haven't played any other origin story yet. Also because I am proclaiming this as my "canon" play-through, I feel like I'm not being honest to the spirit of the game of making decisions and dealing with it's consequences. But like I said, I'm probably just being completely anal about it and just need to go with it. I guess one way to look at it is like writing a book. You make the story that suits you the most but sometimes I get so caught up in what the creators intent was instead of just enjoying the ride.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SoniaCarreras In reply to ChristiVivar [2010-06-29 11:40:11 +0000 UTC]

Our very first playthrough (because I consider the one my husband played as half mine XD) didn't involve any walkthrough until I got hooked and started to look for answers in internet just because I was too impacient to wait for my hubby to watch. And even then I stayed silent and never helped him unless he asked (not in this game, but there are games in which you end up needing a playthrough to solve puzzles, etc). But I think we didn't get the most of the game because of that. There are plenty of side quests and dialogue options you can easily skip, and the "hardening" options are so easy to spoil that if you really want a good outcome, you really need to know them beforehand. So he actually is re-playing some bits of the game and even those are lame...

I don't feel guilty for having cheated in my own playthrough. I doubted I was going to play again once I finished (I'm finding hard to start again with a new PC, mainly because some parts like Ostagar and the joining are a bit boring to replay) and I wanted my playthrough to be as complete as possible. And even so, I know I've skipped many things, from side quests (specially some ones you can get before the wedding as a City Elf) to bugs which didn't trigger (she doesn't have Zevran's earring in her inventory T_T), or even things I played bad for lack of information (i.e.: I wanted Loghain to give the last blow to the Archdemon, and I didn't find any information about how to make sure of it, so just in case, I took control of him instead of my PC during all the fight, which meant all the party except him was dead. Then there was a cutscene in which he offered to give the last blow and I though "Damn it, if I had known I'd be controlling Yllwenn, whose movements I know better, and surely I'd have enjoyed the battle much better"). So sometimes I think I'd like to play her story again just to re-play those mistakes.

I guess both ways of playing are valuable. The first has the emotion of the surprise, it is like watching a film you've never watched before. The second, as you say, is like writing your own story, or watching a film the second time with the nice addition that you can change the outcome of some small details you'd have liked to change the first time you watched it (have you ever had that feeling? When you watch a film you have already watched, and in the moment the main character is going to do something stupid, something you know it will lead to disaster, you want to shout "Don't do it!" and he does it no matter how many times you watch the movie. I've had it many times, LOL!!!)

And I looove long replies!!!! So I can write long ones myself!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChristiVivar In reply to SoniaCarreras [2010-06-30 01:04:16 +0000 UTC]

LOL I do that all the time, but my mother is the queen of "Don't do it!" No matter how many times she's watched a movie, she still acts with the same amount of surprise when she did when she first saw it. I'm like "Geez, Mom, tone it down, you know he'll be okay." A bit of hypocrisy there but stilll

Yeah, I see what you're saying. I just have to get myself in that mindset. It is like writing your own story or re-watching a movie with alt-endings or deleted scenes, I think that's what I like best about a game like this. There is something new every time you play. Now all I have to do is find the time to play it.

But once I play my ideal game, I'm going to retire my City-Elf and try one of the other origin stories. I'll probably play a male next time. Call me crazy, but I can't imagine romancing Alistair with another girl, even if it's a girl I created. I feel like he's cheating on me. Or, it could be the perfect time to see what Zeveran is all about. ;D

Oh God, I've been infected with Fangirl-itis! Don't come near me if you wish to keep your dignity!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SoniaCarreras In reply to ChristiVivar [2010-06-30 10:34:08 +0000 UTC]

LOL! Dignity? I have none left, don't worry. I'm getting so fangirly latelly than I even purchased the Zevran Approves T-shirt from Bioware and I feel jealous when I see other artists' stories about their wardens and Zevran. Speciall if they have male wardens (I know Zevran is bi-sexual but in my story he's more inclined to women). Of course it's not insane jealousy... I still admire their works and enjoy reading it but something inside me cries "Hey, but thats MY Zevran you're playing with", LOL!

I also want to retire my City Elf when I finish her story, unless I replay it from the beginning or there are new DLCs to play with her. But one can never say never. Maybe as soon as Alistair starts being irresistible again I'll get hooked to my female noble I can't imagine it, but it can happen...

It makes me very sad that there is little f!Tabris love out of all the origin stories but F!Cousland is so saturated within the fandom you'd think there was only one origin story. And I know why: because she can become queen and marry Alistair. You know that used to bother me too but as time went on I realized that the queen ending isn't necessarily the happy ending everyone wants to believe it is. Considering that you don't even have to be in love with Al to marry and become queen(consort). Its a political move no matter how you feel about him. It's a rare thing to find a Cousland who didn't go the queen route but they're out there and I feel a bit more respect to them in that regard. Then they get angry because he doesn't runaway with them at the end of Awakenings and I'm pretty sure that's on purpose on the devs part for the reasons stated above but, they may end up changing that with a patch just to keep them from crying about it (a new patch will be coming out soon fixing a lot of thinks like the dagger glitch and they even added love notes from whoever you romanced in Awakenings).

Most feel the mistress ending isn't good enough but through many discussions and my own realizations that, if you have a Hardened Alistair, who says that he'd even pursue the 'make an heir thing'? Unhardened Alistair puts duty before his own happiness, something he's done for years but Hardened Al does the opposite, if you convince him and he's totally alright with it. My ire comes from the fact that a lot make it seem like that ending is the end all and be all but as more than one someone has pointed out, why would only one origin be allowed that if that was the best ending/out come? I think one of the devs even kinda brought this up in relation to that you basically forced yourself into being queen/king in a public place during an important meeting without any provocation from anyone including your beloved Alistair.

I'm not in anyway going to think less of you for starting a Cousland story. You're cool and you're my Deviart-buddeh and unless you kill my family and burn down my house I'm not going to hate you for something like that. Really what just bothers me is the attitude as I said before. It in many ways shares the same properties as the whole PC version vs. Console version. The eliteness of PC gamers rubs me raw as if everyone who plays on the console is too stupid, lazy, broke and still lives with their mama to be able to shell out $500 to buy a new computer that will run ONE $40 game. I'm sorry but I'm not going to shell out hundreds of dollars just to play a handful of games when I can have my pick of hundreds of games that ALL WORK on one platform with me having to go out and buy components with money I could be spending on games. The ridiculousness of it all is mind boggling. I'm not saying PC gaming should go away, but I like the standard that consoles bring to the market. It keeps developers from making games that "work on computers not made yet" ala Crysis and lets everyone enjoy them. I would hope that this standard will one day extend to PC gaming, not eliminate it. Just because hardware developers come out with stronger and faster chip-sets and video cards doesn't mean software devs need to program for that (high) standard. Those who have money to burn to keep their computers current are a very small minority. It's not fair to the rest of us.

Wow! Two rants in one post. New record!

LOL!!! But I want my Cousland to be a queen!!! T_T

Hahaha, I'm guilty of lack of originality and imagination there. Yes, I chose a Cousland this time because I wanted to see the Queen ending, but it's a cold decission and I'm guessing I wont' get in love with this character as I was with my City Elf, but well... I wanted just a different outcome.

But you know what? If I had started playing DAO without any knowledge of the game, without my husband playing first or even without my husbands' PC romancing Alistair, I think the outcome would have been the same. Why? Well, mostly for all my own prejudices in roleplaying and even in real life. First: I don't like playing male characters, and I don't even like playing non-human characters. As I said before I have a terrible lack of imagination so I can't see myself in the shoes of a male, and it's hard for me to play an elf or a dwarf because I think they should act different than humans and I'm too lazy (yes I know I say that too often) to "warm" my mind to try to think the way they should. So I would have chosen a female human. And I don't like playing mages, because I don't feel comfortable using spells. From all the character classes available at DAO, my favourite are Rogues. So that only leaves one Origin for me: Female Cousland. I still can't understand why a young noble lady would be a rogue with pickpocket and lockpicking skills, but anyway they're useful. So she would have been my first choice.

And of course she would have romanced Alistair, because Alistair's romance is the very first to trigger if you are kind to him, and he's so irresistible, so I guess she would have ended up being the queen. Despite my crush on blonde elves, LOL, and mainly because another stupid prejudice I have in real life... I don't like the man being shorter than the woman so for a female human, I doubt I'd have even tried to romance Zevran. That and no one is the reason I chose a City Elf to romance him, a choice I haven't regreted yet since after watching 4 of the 6 avialable origins I still think City Elf is my favourite (Noble Dwarf is very interesting too, but a bit sad and hard, and anyway I don't like playing dwarves. Even if I ADORE *aimo 's Aeducan stories).

So you see, I was lucky my husband played first and I could avoid being one more of the bunch of unoriginal people who chose a Female Cousland to be a queen as their favourite playthrough. And BTW, if I ever play a male character, he surely will be a mage (I still need to decide if an elf or human, though I'm afraid I'll chose human for the height issue I told you) to romance Morrigan. Pretty unoriginal too XD. At least I don't plan to burn your house

And... about the PC issue... I agree completely. Why buying new computers each time you want to play a new game? Moreover, most times that makes the older games impossible to play so you loose the chance of some for the new ones. At least with consoles you know that during many years you can use the same games, and if you keep the old one, when you update you'll still have it for the old games...

I've always thought, PCs are for working and for the internet. Consoles for gaming. Gaming in PCs gives more trouble than fun. But it's my opinion, anyway.

I should wake up earlier to talk to you more often, LOL! I'm quite the opposite. I don't like playing human characters if I have a choice. My reasoning, and it may be a bit weak but, I'm already human and I know what it's like to be me and frankly it's quite boring, . In any given game I usually play elf or if that option is not available to me I play a mage class. Always. But, with DA: O, I just couldn't ignore the setup story of the City-Elf. I was the first one to get my attention. I mean who doesn't want to go all Kill Bill for justice. I know I do! Also, the fact that elves in this game are so relatable. I mean, I love Tolkien-esque elves and all but you have to play them a certain way, but I like how DA: O portrayed them in this game. A society of a once proud people now living in squaller as second-class citizens to humans? Awesome! And so much story potential in role-play. I myself am from a minority group so it just made the role-playing that more immersive and personal when I played.

As for playing rouge. I NEVER play a melee class, ever. They have to have some magical type abilities for me to even consider it, like Red Mage, Bard or Dancer in Final FantasyXI (I played and will always be Red Mage ). I just have the urge to blow things up as well as stab them to death with a sword. I know Arcane Warrior is right up my alley in DA but you have to wait half the game to get to it. Not cool. I want that ability immediately! But anyway, playing rouge was out of my natural comfort zone but the story one out and I put aside my default preferences to play a story I felt like was the most interesting. I am now a rouge lover! This will never change. Oh, I'll still play mage when it interests me but now I'm a sneaky little pickpocket setting traps and hiding in the shadows. This is doubly funny because my husband ALWAYS plays a thief class (first), and now I'm a thief right along there with him.

The playing as a guy thing, hmmm, I've never tried it in actually role-play but I don't think I'll have a problem with it since the majority of video games out there have a male protagonist. But to be fair, you don't really identify with them as much as you're guiding them through the story. There's only a few male protagonists that I personally have identified with but they were all silent protagonist (like Link, Gordan Freeman, or Chrono). If I decide to try out the Human Noble story I'm defiantly playing male. M!Cousland seems to get no love in fandom as well, I'll throw him a bone. But I'm totally with you on the dwarves. *aimo 's stories are awesome and I think dwarves are cool in the as secondary chacaters but as a PC, I just can't identify with them. With elves, even Tolkien-like elves, when one plays them you become them as not so much through relation but wanting to be them. Wanting to be something other than yourself, and unspoiled wise and graceful being. Same with being a mage as in having power to control the natural and unnatural itself.

With dwarves...eeehhh, they mine and dependent on the story they are greedy, very set in their ways, closed minded and incredibly abrasive and DA: O dwarves are no different. People like Aimo can play against the type that even the lore of the game has set up but I can't. Its not that I don't have the imagination to do so it's just that they themselves don't give off that vibe. When I see a dwarf I see a largely independent, strictly business minded person who would rather stick with their mission than make all nice-nice with the people accompany them on their mission. I know their are always exceptions to the rule, like that ever perky Dagna or that dwarven Andrastian priest, but by and large, the dwarves are pretty much everything I said before. The are very traditional and it will take a very, very, very long time before they change from where they are now, as witnessed by the epilogue. So yeah I'm with you on the dwarf thing. I don't think I'd ever play them, but I might fire up the origin story just to see what it's like first hand.

You don't plan to burn my house but you plan to kill my family?! I'll stop you before that happnes!!

Tolkien-esque elves are the reason I don't feel comfortable playing elves, actually. I mean, I LOVE elves, but somehow I love them from outside, like "I'd like to marry an elf", LOL! Even the name of my character, Yllwenn, is taken from a Lord Of The Rings fanfic I wrote many years ago, when I first read the book and I fantasized with distant, amazingly handsome blond elves... But the Mary Sue lover inside of me wants to start by a character I think could be myself in the world I'm playing, that allows me to identify better and to enjoy more. Just my way of thinking of course.

The City Elf origin is my favourite too because I think it is quite original (even if that situation was quite usual in medieval societies, we even have a name in Spain for that and I guess there will be also a name in English but I don't know it, it's called "Derecho de Pernada" and it was the right the local noble had to bed the bride in the wedding night instead of the groom. Awful but true. Real middle ages were dark and cruel and full of unfair situations after all. But somehow, maybe because it is very cruel, I had never seen it in an RPG before and I thought it was a very interesting point of departure for a character.

About elves in DAO... well, the more I look at their society, the more they remind me to Gypsies. Let's see, there are two kind of elves: the errand, proud ones which don't mix with other people in cities and keep their traditions (Dalish elves, quite similar to the romantic errand gypsies we call "zingaros" in Spain), and the gypsies which live in cities, which usually don't accpet the urban society laws and traditions and try to keep their own, are usually poor (or hide their riches) and live in ghettos where crime is quite usual too. And that reminds me of alienages. There are many differences with the real thing of course but the main idea is similar. So I had easy to imagine a rogue character growing up there and yes, I think it is quite an interesting idea for elves, though I miss the noble elves of my childhood dreams

Agree completely about the dwarves... and about killing your family... damn, you caught me!!! XD. Now I must think another thing to catch you by surprise
