Description
For Valentine’s Day of this month and year (February 2014), I decided to look at a beloved fairy tale, the Story of Rapunzel. No, not the Disney version, the original Brothers Grimm fable from the 1800s.
Of course as a kid, I never read a book of the original tale to memory, and most of the time the “Rapunzel Rapunzel, let down your hair” part would be spoofed or mentioned on television. Speaking of that, I am sure the full story was told by one PBS kids show or video, but it never sank into my head.
But, I looked up the story recently and am now fully aware. A wife is sick, so her husband sneaks to a neighboring yard for her favorite food. When caught at one point, he makes a promise to the witch who owns the property, thinking that it’ll never accrue. That promise was his first born, and unfortunately, his wife then reveals that she is pregnant. So, when the baby is born, the witch (whose name is actually Gothel) takes her to a tower where she grows into a beautiful blond woman with really long hair (oh, and she isn’t a princess). A princes comes along one day and visits her, but is pushed out of the window by Gothel and struck blind by thorns. Rapunzel’s hair is cut and she is transported to the desert. Years later, the Prince mets Rapunzel (and I believe some babies) and they merry.
For some reason right now, the story and character seems to have been in my interest… And now, I plan to make a movie. A traditional-hand-drawn-2D animated feature, with inspiration from old Walt Disney films, and as a Christianized version of the story.
I will also will mention other versions & adaptations Rapunzel, like Hannah-Barbara, DreamWork’s Shrek, Don Bluth’s canceled film, other books, parodies, and the one appearing later in Once Upon A Time.
I drew this sketch and… yeah, nothing really to say. Well, for one, I am sorry for the white parts. And second, this is not concept art… this, is art in tribute to the actual tale.
Art by , I’ll draw it because everyone else is doing Tangled art.
