Description

“American Pop” is a 1981 adult rotoscoped animated musical drama feature film directed by mature audrience animator “Ralph Bakshi”. The movie follows a Russian-Jewish immigrant family through four generations of men. Three of each fail to receive popularity, but one manages to become a star. But don’t take my word for it, the previews for the movie tell the exact same story. Also, this review contains spoilers.

The feature starts off with Zalmie, a young boy who tries to find work in the late 1919s and roaring 20s. He goes through several events like losing his mother in a factory fire and having critism from older business gentlemen. While performing as a horse’ rear in a World War I camp, he is short, which leaves his voice ruined and raspy. Zalmie later meets a performer woman and they conceive a son.

When their son (Benny) is at an young age, the mob and mafia families and groups start raiding: resulting in his mother being blown to bits by a bomb. It is a sad change for Zalmie since he starts off as a young lovable boy into an old miserable man. Benny performs with black jazz musicians during the 30s and 40s. Because of bad dealing with the mob, Zalmie requests his son to merry a boss’ daughter. He later enlists in the Second World War and is killed by a Nazi after playing a piano. Benny, although not developed enough, was a really nice character.

Leaving his son Tony fatherless, and with a bad influence in the house by his Mob family. Tony is by far the best character in the movie. He is angry, mean, load, and has problems. I normally like nicer types of characters, but Tony’s realism and troubles make him sympathel and entertaining. Tony goes on a road trip to California to find his purpose. On the way, he stops in Kansas and falls in love with a beautiful blonde, whom he spends an off-screen night with. After a train ride to the west coast, Tony gets and quits a job, but later is requited as a song writer for a band. The current time was around the end of the 50s and dawn of the 60s. this point of the film is where all the sung songs play, like “California Dreaming” by Mamas and Papas, and the best scene in the movie, “Somebody to Love” by Jefferson Airplane. I think everyone can agree on that, right? However the characters get drug addicted over the course of time. After Ton literally drops out of the industry after one LSD moment on stage during Somebody to Love, he is alone and hurting (due to injury and drug illness). On the night the lead singer of the band dies of an overdose, Tony meets a little boy named Pete, who is identical to the blonde he met in Kansas

Pete and Tony (who has wicked and poor movements due to his drug and mental trouble) live as hobos in New York City. Pete also starts losing his vision. Tony and Pete have an emotional father-son bonding moment, where he (Tony) gives Pete his fathers’ harmonica and pawns Pete’s guitar. Tony disappears and is never seen again, which is a much sadder leave-off than the final moment with Zalmie. Pete becomes a drug dealer in order to get into the music industry, during a dark period in the 70s and 80s. the music gets darker and raunchier during this point of the movie. Pete eventually refuses to give some piz… coke to them, unless the band he is dealing with plays one of his songs. They instead listen to him play (Night Moves by Bob Seger) and he walks into the business. Pete fulfills the dreams of the generations before him and becomes a star.

This film is fantastic. It’s time era is throughout most of the 1900s/20th Century, it features four main characters (who not all share the same screen time), and has dramatic storytelling over historic background and accuracy. But, it is a R-Rated film, because of content. But if you are looking for an adult-ordinated film that isn’t as stupid as a Family Guy episode or bloody and pointless like a DC Animated feature, this is something for you.

I wanted to do art for the film, in fact, even before renting it last October. I thought up an idea to use characters from the Christian family home-video series “VeggieTales” to fill the roles. Jimmy Gourd as Zalmie, because he just fits. Dad Asparagus is Benny, because he is a nice and calm fellow.  Larry the Cucumber is Tony, because…  THEY ARE ALMOST THE SAME WHILE BEING COMPLETELY OPPOSITE. And Bob the Tomato is Pete, well… he looks so cool as him. I drew reference from the theatrical poster but put an original take on the picture. Each section the an of the generation is in reflects his time period in the movie. Everything was traditionally colored except the veggies and the black background (which were bucket filled on GIMP). The logo was done on paint. Khalilbia is a play on Columbia Pictures, who distributed the film (and this was also before Sony bought it out) and with the character of Khalil. BakshIdea is a play on Big Idea (VeggieTales) and film director Ralph Bakshi. And yes, that is Peace from “Wizards” as the icon.

Media is owned by the people who own them, and this non-profit fan-art was done by I’ll draw it because no one else will.

Vegetable Pop? Sounds like a downright disgusting soda. X3

That aside, thank God I've found something at least halfway decent procuring from you... But it's gonna take more than this for your streak of atrocities to be anywhere close to forgiven.

This art is a parody of the 1981 film 'American Pop", as said in the description.
