I just felt like doing the different Hover Shoes Sonic has worn in different scenarios.He wore a set of hover shoes in SatAM, however, they were only meant to help slow him down when he's falling.
In Sonic X, he wore a set of hover shoes that Chris had made for him, and as we saw, they helped Sonic stay above the surface of the water, so that he doesn't go into the water.
And just recently in Sonic Prime, he received a pair of hover shoes when he arrived in the No Place, and as we saw, they helped him stay above the surface of the water, however, he was capable of running on the surface of the water instead of skating like his Hover Shoes from Sonic X.
These hover shoes that Sonic has worn really comes in handy, especially if there's water involved.
