Description Moar murder of my pencil crayons! BUT THIS TIME, THE SCANNER BUTCHERED THE COLOURS. Her skin is a lot softer and less flawed irl. -facepalm-

Featuring Skye Baines, one of my OCs from a story I'm writing She's one of my oldest, circa 2004.

I call the guys from this series my Ensemble.

Skye is quite... um... scary. Not so that she is large and intimidating; out of the entire Ensemble, she stands at second most petite. For her size, though, Skye has quite a personality. She's quite no-nonsense with a very strict sense of right and wrong, and has clean-cut opinions: blatantly stupid people peeve her, work before play, stuff like that. Her strong opinions and (careless) ways she expresses them usually makes people think she's a snob, but on closer examination, you realize she voices her thoughts in an attempt to get people to think in a new perspective. She comes off as cold and standoffish, but she is a girl of her word, and always gets things done. Skye is very witty and religiously uses sarcasm, but she does enjoy the occasional letting-her-hair-down (literally and figuratively) moments where she can relax and enjoy not-doing. She's a private person, but it's easy to get her to relax and feel comfortable around someone once they open up, too.

Skye has white orchids, white being the theme to this series. Orchids represent maturity, elegance, refinement, pride, and charm. They're her favourite. And also because they represent things that she strives to be. Oh, and Skye is very self-aware; she's quite.. .er... provocative, and understands how to use her body to her advantage. Which is good, since she's quite gorgeous in description (and I did her no justice here X_X)

The orchids here were done without reference. My mom is an avid orchid grower so we've got pots and pots of these at home.

Her colour theme is cyan and purple, cyan being the colour of her eyes (which doesn't really look cyan here -_-) and purple being a colour for mystery, for sexuality and strength.

Art wise: Fff her hair was painful to colour. It's originally much more yellow irl, and it was here that I lost my white pencil crayon so I had to sub it with a crayola white. WHICH IS WHY THE SKIN SCANNED TERRIBLY, oh my god, sue them.

She gets a black bone stud earring. Baines is old English for "bones".

Thanks for viewing!

A. Use white as a base. It may seem like a useless colour but it makes the colours lying on top super-smooth. Only use white for light-coloured surfaces (in Skye's case, her skin AND hair have a layer of white as the base surface)

B. Never, ever, EVER use printer paper. Get yourself a sketchbook that says it handles wax/crayon mediums well... I recommend some sketchbooks from Canson

C. Layering. When colouring with colour pencil, you always start with the lightest colour first. If you take this picture as an example, take a look at her hair:
1. I put a large expanse of white all over wherever her hair will be. I didn't put any white over where the stray hairs would be, though.
2. I used Laurentian's arizona topaz for every single "highlight", as in lightly colouring where I think the light will reflect on the hair.
3. Then I used canary yellow, lemon yellow, burnt sienna, brown, and smoke gray in that order, all adding depth, etc.

I hope this helped!

Haha, thanks! It's very rare that people who come online ever say "I like this character" rather than "I like how this character looks" XD

For a beauty that stands out in the Ensemble, she sure has her thorns. Unfortunately, this is a similar case on how I designed my OC but this character intrigues me, she seems a lot more responsible despite being portrayed as cold.

Didn't use a reference for the orchids because you're used to seeing 'em around your place? That's understandable, since you've done a fine job on the detail on them.

**Orchids are unbelievably beautiful... I hope more people illustrate them in the future, haha! (and sorry for the double reply... I accidentally pressed "send"...)

Ahaha... I don't think it's a good idea to compare similarities between OCs I know from experience that it does nothing but make one owner or the other insecure, so don't think about how she reminds you of your own OC; rather, it's nice to compare differences. Also, I'm grateful to you for liking her. Skye's main attribute is that she's unbelievably taciturn, but she can be affectionate, too, when she's with the right people.

Indeed, you're absolutely right. What's ironic is that I didn't want to sound like I was comparing either. I must have been very upset and frustrated yesterday(nothing to do with the art either), so I apologize.

Ahahah, I assure you, I made her before Kesha became popular.

It might be the wavy blonde hair and the eyebrows, though.

And ty!
