Description We've been playing around with gemstone photos lately. The first person to correctly name everything I have in my hands wins...my respect or something. Each one has its own story, its own unique personality.

I love the composition of this photo!

To be honest I'm more impressed with your beautiful hands than anything else (although I wouldn't mind snagging those tourmaline!)...... HOW do you have such clean hands if you make jewelry and work with rocks!? You must have an in-house manicurist? I've been feverishly scrubbing my nails for months and I never get the stains out):

Nice photo! How do you keep you nails so pretty!? I solder, pierce and polish everyday... I used to have such pretty nails but not anymore):

Ok, maybe you could throw in some opals. They are even better.

That darker blue one hiding behind the labradorite and turquoise looks like kyanite to me...

SoulStoneDesigns In reply to keyla-etc [2007-05-25 15:27:08 +0000 UTC]

I figured you'd be the one to catch that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

keyla-etc In reply to SoulStoneDesigns [2007-05-25 15:47:58 +0000 UTC]

As the kyanite junkie meekly raises her hand...

Well, we'd already ruled out blue sapphire, it was a little bright for blue spinel (possible, but bright), it wasn't quite the right color for blue fluorite or apatite (again, close, but not greenish enough), and if you had a sapphirine, benitoite or lazulite that large and transparent, I'd have to kill you for it, and there are probably some museums around that would do the same. (Lovely stuff to be certain, but not worth selling my house and moving into my parents' basement for.)

Which left kyanite. At least other people are starting to realize that kyanite exists and is fun stuff, though; when I went looking for kyanite a few years back, I got all sorts of strange looks. And it certainly didn't come in that electric royal blue when you did find it...

SoulStoneDesigns In reply to keyla-etc [2007-05-25 16:06:02 +0000 UTC]

Benitoite....oooh, I wish...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

keyla-etc In reply to SoulStoneDesigns [2007-05-25 18:54:07 +0000 UTC]

Apparently they've even found some pink benitoite recently... I'm not much of a pink person, but just the concept!

Now, what I'd like is some taaffeite. It's rare, very durable (read: can be used as a ring stone without cringeing) and purple. Gets mistaken for spinel a lot. Yeah, musgravite is rarer, but I'm not pressing my luck.

Yummy...

Is this fluorite? this small blue transparent ?
I love fluorites, pity they are too soft/fragile

SoulStoneDesigns In reply to Me-Se [2007-05-25 15:26:06 +0000 UTC]

No fluorite. I agree, I had to quit buying them because they just break too easily.

I know i wouldn't be able to get them right....so i won't try to guess at all, but i'd say this is a fantastic picture, the composition and lighting is great.

There was another picture that had a better composition in my opinion, but it didn't fit on my homepage as well.

Sandandsmoke [2007-05-25 06:05:56 +0000 UTC]

Iolite, labradorite, tourmalines, hmmm, very hard to tell from the photo........ black opals, looks like the carved polished one is a spessartine garnet, and then what I hope is a smoky quartz, mmmm turqouise as was mentioned--- oh c'mon, can we have another view --- there's a glare on some of the stones. The flat one near the back of your hand looks like bloodstone almost, but it could be a fancy jasper or neithe of those things! And I can't tell about the bright blue one buried in the middle. I am close though, right?

SoulStoneDesigns In reply to Sandandsmoke [2007-05-25 06:11:32 +0000 UTC]

also, you have very nice hands. especially since you're a jeweler.... how do you not break all your fingernails? mine are a broken mess.

SoulStoneDesigns In reply to yoboseiyo [2007-05-25 05:49:57 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, you got the turquoise right

My nails are made of STEEL and DOOM.

Actually, I usually have a nice big notch accidentally filed into my left index and thumbnails, I just haven't done much work lately. And for some reason all the skin that's peeling away from my nails didn't show up in this picture (ah, flux and pickle, how I love thee).

yoboseiyo In reply to SoulStoneDesigns [2007-05-25 17:28:41 +0000 UTC]

aaa~h.... now i see. i need nails of steel and doom...... think i could buy some? *wonders where you'd get steel and doom nails*

ahaha! i have a similar notch in my left index nail. i was turning some spacers into toggles and the filing got a little excitable.

and yeah, didn't think i'd get the turquoise wrong. everything else i was pullin' outta my.... head. yeah, my head. ^^-b

SoulStoneDesigns In reply to yoboseiyo [2007-05-25 17:32:16 +0000 UTC]

Nails of steel and doom come from having too much calcium in my body. It also causes me to have kidney stones, so there's the downside.
