This is one of the rare cases when I think your version is actually plain up aesthetically nicer than the original. Usually, you take plain-looking or cutesy pokemon, and apply a nice dose of grotesqueness to create a crazy-awesome version. Here though, I'd say that while the original magmar looked somewhat malformed and odd-looking, this creature seems like a marvellous, mystical, mythological fairy-tale beast.
The application of actual volcanic features which were not particularly apparent on the original magmar does a lot to improve its appearance. While the formations on magmar's brow almost resemble head tumours of some sort, yours much more resemble actual bubbles in burning lava, or live coal, and the translation of magmar's horns into literal fire give this magmar a particularly fantastical quality. Likewise, taking magmar's strangely-plated arms and making them appear covered in magma rocks makes this magmar seem less plain bizarre, and more like some sort of enchanting volcano guardian. And as with charmander, this version features a brilliant, blazing tail of live coal at its tip. There's a sort of wisdom in this creature's eyes, and along with the beardlike features on magmar's chin give this pokemon an enlightened quality, like a sage lava dragon, spirit of the volcano.
And I will conclude in saying the background for this is excellent. The burning, glowing lava, and the floating platform of molten rock the pokemon is standing on are all top notch, as is the rising smoke coming from it.

you have some really intense interpretations of the pokemon designs. i find it difficult to stay faithful to the pokemon and still envision it in an entirely different style but you seem to breeze through that.
