"Hey, sugar." A snap of gum, a broad smile, elbows on the counter. She stared him in the face. "What can I get for ya?"

"Noth..." He coughed. His voice was hoarse, his throat raw. "Nothing, thanks, this is fine." He took a sip of the pitch-black coffee, ignored the sludge that stuck to his lips and forced it's way down his throat.

"Aw'right. Hey, I ain't seen you here a'fore. What's yer name, sugar?" Plesant, but not everly so.

"Uh..." he paused, looking at her blankly. "I don't know."
