Description The Naufragados Beach is the southernmost beach in Florianópolis, 43 km from the city center. A three-kilometer trail separates the beach from the road, where there are waterfalls and the ruins of a flour mill. Access can also be done by taking a boat from Caieira da Barra do Sul beach to the tip of Naufragados.

The reason for the name of this beach is uncertain. There are two hypotheses:
One refers to the sinking of one of the vessels on Juan Díaz de Solís's expedition, which occurred there in April 1516, while seeking shelter from the southern bay. Aleixo Garcia and about ten other crew members survived this shipwreck, having lived for some years among Carijós Indians who inhabited that coast;
Another version attributes this name to the sinking of two medium-sized vessels used by the Portuguese, right in front of the beach, in 1753. Following the determinations of the Portuguese Court, around 250 Azorean settlers were traveling to Rio Grande do Sul when the accident occurred at that location . Only 77 settlers escaped, part of which remained on the island and others went to Laguna and Rio Grande do Sul.

The trail to Naufragados is well marked, being widely used at least since the inauguration of the lighthouse, on the right shore of the beach, in 1861. From this time on, families migrated to the region, a mill was built and the first swiddens were opened in the woods. Thriving colonial ventures exploited African people through slavery. From this period, there are some ruins that can still be seen on the edge of the trail. Some improvements in the path layout, steps and drainage ditches can also be noticed.

In addition to the Lighthouse erected in 1861, there are also some sections of walls and the original armament of three 120 mm C / 40 Armstrong guns manufactured in 1893, which are still in good condition, which were part of a fortification that integrated the old defensive system of the island of Santa Catarina.

Further south, near Ponta dos Naufragados, is the Araçatuba Island, where the Fortress of Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Araçatuba was built in 1742.
