Love this spalted wood AND you picked the perfect arrangement for carving it out.
Great work!

Thanks hadasaugh ! Truth be told.... I broke it in half and had to cover evidence of me being clumsy.

Okay, you told me the truth, now you've got to hide this comment so no one else knows!Β It looks wonderful and the wrapping was a good choice for an unexpected break.

When I listed the thing for sale on ETSY, I wrote,
"The handle 'features' a recessed area which has been wrapped neatly with waxed linen cord. Now there might be some folk suspicious that this could be just a clever 'cover up' for clumsy hands having snapped the wood in two. But I am shamelessly calling it a design feature."
That way I was able to sell it with a (somewhat) clear conscious. π: 0 β©: 1

Well, it's the same when you carve and a chunk of wood breaks off...you have to make accommodations!Β Good thinking!

Mmm.... spalted wood... I am jealous of your wood source. The dark cord compliments the spalted lines wonderfully and I wholly agree with it's addition. Excellent. It looks very comfortable to hold with that cord supporting.
Also... it looks like it'd make an amusing ice cream scoop if the edges we a bit sharper. Out of curiosity, what was your intended use of this spoon? I'd soak my beard in soup with it and may strain my tongue getting goodies from the bottom. Perhaps I'm asking for lore... I'm not sure. Too much dA today XD

Hey.. thanks for the note. Actually the spoon is meant for decorative purposes only. The spalt (caused by a fungus during the decay process) might not be great to put into mouth. Also... the way the wrapped cord got there is that the spoon snapped in half during the sanding process. So the cord is a sort of Pee Wee Herman move.... "I meant to do that."
When the wood is this decayed... it has areas that have to be saturated with super glue for stability.... or else, you can stick your thumb nail deep into the wood.
As for the source... I got it off ebay. There is always a bundle being sold.π: 0 β©: 1

the pattern's really pretty, & the scoop of it really looks like the other seashell-looking spoons!

Thanks! The patterns in wood can sometimes be quite graphic... for sure.
