Turns out this is a heron, a young one by the looks of it. Interesting...I have not seen this bird after this day.?

It must be a juvenile then as it doesn't look "matured" and have those distinct colorings:    But the more I look at younger herons, the more it makes sense because there's no other bird in the area that looks like that, as far as I can tell. I did see a heron nest a while back, but I figured the nest was un-used as I've only seen it once.

Agreed.  The photo I included was of a bird not yet in adult plumage, and it looked exactly like your picture.  So, I would say yes, it's a juvenile.
