Description just some dopey nostalgia. i spent the entirety of what i consider my childhood riding around in a navy blue 86 Chevy Celebrity wagon.

even if that weren't the case i'd still wish these kid-toting road warriors back into popularity and stomp the SUV into obscurity. we didn't need a TV screen or out own AC. no. we had vinyl seats, covered in gummy bears heating up nicely in the sunlight of a panoramic back window presenting us with all the sights and wonders the interstate could offer. and a portable tape player. plus you got to ride backwards! i mean COME ON.

oh and also we weren't a rolling manifestation of human insecurity sucking the world dry of resources and automatically killing anybody driving a vehicle smaller than our own with whom we collided because we were changing DVDs to shut the kids up.

5 years ago they weren't nearly as trendy as they are again today with the whole mainstreaming of the nostalgia wave thing goin on-- lots of new wagons on the market-- i still only see even later model buick wagons or chevy celebs on the road with the same rarity though. they're there-- but it's still a treat to see one.

glad ya dug it!

I love Station Wagons too!
My grandpa has a Ford Escort Station Wagon, and it's been through hell and back, but I still love it, and it's our family car.

Awesome, That it is! xD
Actually there was a sky blue one that is much prettier. And I believe there is a red one. But I'm guessing white was either the most popular or most produced, or both.

sparkpenguin In reply to Tailji [2012-04-07 06:55:52 +0000 UTC]

yeah, that's weird.
like those "bleen" chevy cavaliers, i had one, and everyone my age in my county did for some reason. many with trunk-dents.

they seem to produce a lot of the same color, i dunno why. white makes sense, but obnoxious blue-green? i don't get it, but i don't see it anymore.

I know.lol.
I don't really like the blue-green one, but I once saw a actual sky blue color, and a red, while my grandpa, someone in our neighborhood and the closest Pizza Hut has white Escorts.

in America we have cars called "Vibe" and "Probe" which, in addition to their original meaning, are both names more popular in modern times for things that go in the ass for pleasure.

Oh man, we used to have a Bronco, an 86 Ford Bronco that was fantastic. it traveled cross country with us and did everything, from texas to north carolina to florida and back to texas, and it was bought in Germany lol. Oh the days. I hate SUV's though, there's no need for you to have such a large vehicle. We moved a shit ton, do you? You only have two kids, you don't need a bazillion seats, you own a fucking tank dude! Your gas sucks and you're only stroking your own ego by owning that huge Escalade.

And don't get me started on mini vans.

sparkpenguin In reply to DemonShuriken87 [2009-04-20 21:57:44 +0000 UTC]

i'd still rather take back the days of the minivan than the SUV. okay before the Odyssey and the advent of the backseat TV.

why do kids/manhood automatically equal a huge truck or SUV? are you ALWAYS ferrying the entire soccer team around? is it unsanitary for children to sit ass-to-ass three deep in the backseat? i used to love when st a sleepover/birthday party we'd drive somewhere and the car was crowded. it was different, and fun! and it wasn't unsafe i mean FFS everyone had a seatbelt.

people seem to have some kind of stigma that driving a car that isn't a Mercedes M-class or a Dodge Charger is for single women only.

and yeah we moved... all the time.

but... isn't the Bronco an SUV?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DemonShuriken87 In reply to sparkpenguin [2009-04-21 02:42:38 +0000 UTC]

it is but we used it. we hauled stuff constantly, moved all the time so it had to be able to hold mass amounts of stuff and tow a uhaul, and it was also my mom's since she got it from my dad in the divorce. License plate said 'waz his' i love it. I actually do miss the Bronco, it was from a time where an SUV just meant you had stuff to do, rather than "look at me in my HUGE ass car".

I know! We used to shuttle people around in our car since it was so big. Hell, me and my mom's rommates kid used to BEG to have the back seats fold down so that we could roll around and lay down in the trunk while mom was driving. Unsafe, maybe, but fucking fun? HELLS YES! Oh the good old days.

I would rather die than own a minivan or an SUV. I could make it work in a car like what I have, and if there isn't enough room in a car that seats five, then stop having kids. period.

sparkpenguin In reply to DemonShuriken87 [2009-04-21 09:12:56 +0000 UTC]

oh yeah you had mentioned you moved a lot. see, that is the kind of situation that benefits from a utilitarian car. not fatass little-miss-middle-aged-highlights who just has groceries and a stroller.

DemonShuriken87 In reply to sparkpenguin [2009-04-24 03:15:22 +0000 UTC]

I know! I see people that roll up to my store in huge cars, like tanks, and all they have is ONE kid and a stroller, maybe. It's ridiculous. I love how in America the idea of wealth or status is bigger is always better. I would be happy, ecstatic really, with a nice small sport car rather than some huge ass gas guzzler that will tear our environment a new one. me and my mother like to call people in Hummer's tools. Why they made that available to civies I'll never know.

As a military brat I'm offended every time I see an army car rolling down the street with spinners, a thumping stereo, and some punk ass kid behind the wheel who will NEVER take the thing off road. It's made for South America, the Desert, anything off road, and yet... it's stuck on highways and suburbia. It hurts my soul a little as a car freak to see something like the noble Hummvie turned into what it is now.

yeah... i really liked the original models. i remember the red one they had in Alex Mack the first time i saw it and being... enthralled.

they still get shitty mileage and top out at like, sixty/seventy though.

DemonShuriken87 In reply to sparkpenguin [2009-04-24 13:51:07 +0000 UTC]

yea, that's a reason to laugh at them whenever you see them though. They cannot go fast. Never have been, never will be unless they make it the size of a regular SUV. And half the time people get the Hummer for the size and status. *sigh* oh America.

Yeah sounds it. I reckon they're that common because they say 'lower-middle-class' to Hollywood so resoundingly. Here we've got other vehicles, but as a result a lot of people think they're incredibly popular cars in the US.
