I talked with this guy briefly on his costume.
Apparently this is not just accurate, it IS what they wore for the movie! I don't know how he managed it, but he was wearing an actual movie prop.
Its made out of what looks like rubber encased foam (kinda like those orange life preservers).

Haha, fantastic! I knew it would be possible to find one of these, I just have no idea how to go about it. I'de seen these costumes in at least 3-4 non Starship Troopers movies, including in the Train Job episode of Firefly. They seem to make their way around the Sci Fi circuit as much as the actors do.

The outfit seemed pretty practical and very well made.
I gotta lookup how hard it is to make that rubberized stuff, it looks great as armor.
