Description After defeating the Undead Scourge on the icy continent of Northrend, Prince Arthas Menethil confronted Mal'Ganis the Dreadlord.

Mal'Ganis: "So, you've taken up Frostmourne at the expense of your comrades' lives, just as the Dark Lord said you would. You're stronger than I thought."

Prince Arthas: "You waste your breath, Mal'Ganis. I heed only the voice of Frostmourne now."

Mal'Ganis: "You hear the voice of the Dark Lord. He whispers to you through the blade you wield. What does he say, young human? What does the Dark Lord of the Dead tell you now?"

Prince Arthas: He tells me that the time for my vengeance has come.

Mal'Ganis: "What? He can't possibly mean to--" Arthas then stabs Mal'Ganis with runeblade Frostmourne killing him. (At least that what happened in Warcraft III: Reforged.)

Prince Arthas: "It is finished."

We don't know this until World of Warcraft came out, but it turns out Demons like Dreadlords can't truely be killed outside the Twisted Nether realm. Mal'Ganis returns three times in WoW.

After slaying the Dreadlord, Arthas fled into the frozen north, leaving his troops to fend for themselves. Arthas soon lost the last remnants of his sanity. Arthas became the first of the Lich King's Death Knights. He was given a suit of Saronite Armor, and killed nearly all of his own men before raising them as undead. Some among them, notably Captain Falric, Captain Marwyn and Thassarian, were raised as Death Knight in Arthas' service.

The Dwarven Expedition now lead by Baelgun Flamebeard took shelter in the Shadow Web Caverns of Azjol-Nerub.

At the same time, the undead mysteriously vanished from the Eastweald. Most of the citizens thought that this meant Arthas had succeeded in destroying the Scourge in Northrend. In truth, the Lich King had ordered his forces to pull back in order to make the population believe that Arthas had defeated the undead and trick them into welcoming him back with open arms.
