Description Plectapelagidea is a clade of shell-less Quadrivalva closely related to the Pennastromidea. When the early species established in the depths of the sea, they no longer needed to protect themselves with a shell. Instead, they evolved so as to make better use of the limited energy available in the abyssal zone. Their flesh has become translucent and better adapted to the tremendous pressures of the treacherous depths. They feed on marine snow that adheres to their four gluey tendrils. Plectapelagidea emit a steady gentle glow that attracts predators of the creatures that prey on them, thus protecting them.
