Description I have never gotten so angry over something than I did a few days ago. I FUCKING LOVE Devil May Cry and felt that the last one, while still good, was a bit of a let-down. So I've been anticipating the next instalment like a starved dog looking at a steak. Now, I feel like a rabid dog whole could quite possible die from his illness.. I seriously could not believe this was real when I saw the trailer. It was only until a few seconds after it ended that it hit me.

Dear Ninja Theory: WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU THINKING? WHY WOULD YOU TOTALLY FUCK WITH AN ICONIC AND MUCH LOVED CHARACTER LIKE THAT??? My god! "Appealing to Western audiences"? What sort of bullshit is that? Does that mean Mario, being a Japanese made character, doesn't appeal to the West either? I want you all to stop production of this immediately, pay Capcom back their investment and publicly apologise for smearing your shit all over my favourite series.

I was expecting an epic sequel bigger than all the previous games, with more playable characters, and with a story that fills in most of the plot holes. Imagine, co-op where you can a friend pick your favourite characters and take on the returned Mundus in a gothic castle with epic organ pipes and metal blasting in the background while you try to out-Stylish each other. BUT WE'RE NOT FUCKING GETTING THAT NOW ARE WE?

Oh, and I hope this catches on; the new character should not be referred to as "Dante". From now on, his name is "Faget".

I totally agree with you on this one.Β I am very sad to see such a beloved and innovative gaming franchise like Devil May Cry get ruined and so hated because of the horrendous reboot, so way to go Ninja Theory and Capcom for teaming up and giving us a Dante we don't need and a reboot that we didn't ask for. From the heights of the third and fourth games, when it was still in its prime, and to the rancid past few years with the reboot's announcement and a huge battle between the publisher/developer and the fans during the development of the game and before its release, which culminated with a bad-beyond-belief reboot and it bombed in terms of sales. The highly toxic venom spewed over the reboot would have melted everyone if so many people at the time weren’t waiting for Bayonetta 2 or playing Metal Gear Rising instead. In a desperate attempt to get into the Call of Duty numbers crowd-appeal machine, the final product came up with something far, far worse. Even the gameplay and the storyline and the writing and the characters were botched to the point you wonder what the hell everyone involved was thinking. Some lessons learned here, foremost being not to outsource Japanese-made game franchises to below-par developers in the US and Europe.

Devil May Cry was an instant hit for Capcom in 2001, with the first game (released on the PS2 originally defining the Action Hack-and-Slash genre and creating the Stylish Action subgenre. co-written and directed by Hideki Kamiya, who would go on to PlatinumGames and make Bayonetta and The Wonderful 101 and Scalebound. The first game was marvelous before the second game (released in 2003) went off the rails. In hindsight, it was the first sign of what was coming. But the series stormed back with a phenomenal third game (with the viciously difficult original released in 2005 and the easier and content-packed Special Edition released in 2006) that had some awesome gameplay and the introduction of Dante's evil twin brother. The momentum was retained with the equally great Devil May Cry 4 (Which saw the series come onto a Microsoft console for the first time), with the best gameplay ever in the whole series, and despite being rushed out of the door, still remains true to the spirit of the original series. And that was it. The announcement of the reboot and the reveal of the drastically redesigned Dante in 2010 both shocked and angered many fans, and the next two years - from the development to the game going gold before its release - were even worse, as they waged a huge battle between the publisher/developer and themselves. When fans are openly hostile to a video game series they love due to outsourcing and changes they don't need, you didn't take off into the sky and stuck to the landing. You malfunctioned in mid-air and crash-landed on the ground.

To this day I still think DmC Devil May Cry was deliberate attempt of burying the brand for good. It sucks that Trish was also not there sleeping with both Dante and Lady. Never before I have ever encountered a video game reboot so poorly handled. I really hope that Capcom goes out of business for this disaster and the numerous others dumb decisions they have made throughout the years.

For real. It's really sad to see how disconnected Capcom has become from it's fans and it's own in-house talent. I'm sure there always was some degree of hierarchical bullshit, particularly with how they treated the truly amazing game designers that worked for them who have now left, but it just gets worse and worse with each year. It just really sucks that absolute pit of all this had to involve my favourite series and character. I mean, really, the fact that the Capcom higher-ups didn't stop Tameem and co from running their mouths off and making the situation worse just showed how little they care.

At this point, I just hope they get to the point that they start selling off their IP rights or shares or SOMETHING that'll wrestle control out of the hands of whatever troupe of chimpanzees direct the company now.

Stop the whining. If you have not realised that this is the old Dante yet then -.-

The game is about Dante when he is 18-20 years old. You didnt think he would look exactly the same as dmc 1-4 Dante as a kid now did you?

Here are some facts:

Faget as you call him has partly white hair. He still uses rebellion. He still uses ebony and ivory. Rebellion looks different because Rebellion can shapeshift. Rebellion has always had the power to shapeshift, it just havent been showed in the already released games. "Faget" Still carries out the mission to avenge his mother by slaying demons. When "Faget" Enters the dmc 5 version of devil trigger, his hair turns completely white, as well as his coat turns completely red.

In this game Dante is evolving into the Dante we know from Dmc 1-4.

All you haters should get that into your heads..

Dante was either 18 or 19 in 3. This is an alternate canon/reboot. Dante no longer has the white steak in his hair. The guns are different because in the original story, they were hand made by a human especially for Dante (who was using his alias "Tony Redgrave" to get them, which is inscribed on the sides of each gun) while in this game they're some sort of ancient demon weapons. Mundus is majorly different and looks like this: [link]
That alone tells you it's a different continuity because Dante had never met Mundus in person until 1. He recognises him from his three eyes in 1 from when his mother was killed: [link]
This Mundus is like some sort of demon mob boss who runs Limbo City. He's totally different. Also, Dante is half Angel in this instead of being half Human, hence why his weapon has Angelic and Demonic forms.

Original Dante already has a back story that you can piece together from little details in 1 and 3 and from the first novel and it's totally different from this game. "All us haters" actually know allot about the lore of Devil May Cry. Why do you think I'm mad over this? There's so much unexplored story they could have made this game about, so many things they could have kept going for at least 2 more games, but instead they're retconning it all to "appeal to a wider audience". It's sad when anyone does that to a series that isn't over, but now that it's MY series, I'm especially angry about it.

So why don't you get all that into your head before trying to imply I don't know what I'm talking about?

3 was a prequel. This is a reboot that doesn't fit in with the established story. Ninja Theory and Capcom have both said this multiple times "dip shit".

It is so obvious that they are trying to make Dante seem more badass so it appeals to a different audience. It's sad that they think smoking makes him look good. Cliche. It takes away from the original Dante persona.

Spelonker In reply to goldfox [2010-11-12 18:11:22 +0000 UTC]

That's what they're saying alright. The lead designer at Ninja Theory thinks his idea of Dante is cooler. Which happens to be the exact same look he has himself.

I nearly cried when I heard the nwes :c
I'm still hoping that it gets canned before it comes out, or they do the smart thing and tear it away completely from the franchise.
Or else I hope barely anyone buys the game and they either go fucking bankrupt or get no money and serve as an example as to why YOU DON'T FUCK WITH THINGS THAT ALREADY WORK BRILLIANTLY )8<

Fuck 'appealing to Western Audiences;, we already have enough rugged, stubbly brown haired muscled up guys. No more, please D: Dante was one of the original platinum haired badarses in the gaming industry, he shouldn't have to change ;A;

Thing is about this "Western appeal" excuse is that, me, you, everyone tearing Ninja Theory a new asshole and thousands of others are Western. And we already love Devil May Cry the way it is. It's just their terrible excuse for not being able to work with a story/universe that was already well established.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Striped-Tie In reply to Spelonker [2010-09-22 09:45:57 +0000 UTC]

Thing is, I reckon it would be an okay stand alone game if it wasn't jumping into the bandwagon of a currently very popular franchise. It's as if they're trying to appeal to those handful of people that just generally don't want to play a game with a guy with platinum hair due to personal bias. They're going to lose a lot of traditional fans from doing that.

That or I beat the guy who brought up the idea has a really bad Devil May Cry fanfiction hidden away in their computer

The game looks like it'll appeal to the more placid fans if anything, you know the ones that sit back and just accept what comes from the company. Granted I'm one of those sort of placid players, but this is a bit of a stretch even for me

lol I completely agree.

Let's pretend for a second this isn't a "reboot" and it's another prequel. Why exactly does the story need an even farther back prequel, when the last game left more questions than answered? Also, if you're doing another prequel, just go back and let us play as Sparda rebelling... but then I still stand by my stance I've always had on that one: I don't trust Capcom not to fuck that up, so I hope they never touch it.

ROFL at the text shooting hahaha! D

I'm not much of a fan of the redesign myself, though, I'm going to personally give this game a try, then finalize my opinion. A similar thing happened to another game (actually, a lot of other games), a lot of people hated it, including me, until I played it, and liked it, and didnt mind the change. Though I personally think this 'change' was a bit too drastic, I'm going to continue feeling rather 50/50 about it.

But this pic is hilarious though btw. Made my night. C:

I know there's been a couple games where they give the main character a slight redesign (example, Sonic), but they always keep the same basic idea (he's blue, spiky and runs really fast), but this new Faget doesn't resemble Dante at all. The only common thing is that he has black and white guns. The game might play totally fine and might have it's own merits, but it's not Devil May Cry.

which goes to show how bad of an idea this was. If I want a "grim and gritty" action game I pick from about five billion of them littering the shelves. Dante and DMC are supposed to be FUN
