Oh my gooness, I love your inking. It's just beautiful. Not to mention that you chose a wonderful scene to illustrate, and re-envision into kick ass awesome. Is this entirely traditional? Obviously the brush work is, but the blackness of the lines is so crisp and even--although I suppose that you have access to a brilliant scanner.
Anyway, I love the energy of your Gandalf. He looks like a tiny lion taking down a deranged wildebeast. The action is incredible, and much more human than he ever is as Gandalf the White. I can't tell if he's scowling in determination, or grinning in triumph. But it doesn't matter, as then he can do both, and it is marvelous.
I';m enchanted by your balrog, by the way. The molten cracks of the rock, and the hair on the arms are great touches. I just would like to know where the whip leaking tongues of flame got to, seeing how important it is.
I'm also a little disturbed that the Balrog is so cute that I'm feeling sorry for it. Not in a "Gandalf is killing the last of your race when you've been entombed within the earth already cut off from your master and fellow dark army generals for centuries" form of sorry, but in a "you just put down an innocent puppy" kind of sorry. That abyssal monster is too cute for words...
Or I'm just deranged.
Anyway, the picture is marvelously strong, and captures an epic moment. Kudos and hats off.

Thanks for the kind words! It is entirely traditional, I'd kill myself if I used a computer brush. The whip was probably dropped as he got stabbed. I kinda thought it'd take away from the brilliance of the lightning stab. Or something... I didn't really think of the whip, but at this point I'd just assume he had dropped it while taking it in the chest.

Hehheh. Good sword work can do that to a body.
That works just as well. It was only a minor silly observation, anyway.

Oh no you're good yo, I'm always down to hear what people are thinking. I probably shouldn't be writing replies at 130 am

I agree with assessment, unless you're the kind of person who gets inspired by the shadows in the corners at 1:30 AM. If you are, maybe you should stay up later. If not, however, a good night of sleep is so much more your friend than responding to an internet geeks.

Ah well, we're all internet geeks so no worries. I mean, I spent my night playing the 90s X-Men game on my xbox tonight. You're in good company here - and yeah I like shadows at 1:30. Late night is the best kind of night!

Oh 90s X-Men... That brings a tear of childish joy to my heart. TAS, for all of its issues, made me cry with the death of Morph. So melodramatic. It was a great team. Comics wise, I actually prefer mid-late 80s, but that's because I was just addicted to New Mutants.
Man. Sorry about the ramblesville. Have I mentioned that the shading on 'Smote' is amazing. I love how dramatic black and white can be, and you've really used it to perfection here.
