Family friend David Kirschner and I share the same birthday (May 29th) and he's been very encouraging (and inspiring) over the years in terms of my artistic growth, so every year I draw a little birthday picture for him as a thank you. For those who don't know, he co-wrote An American Tail, so he was sort of Fievel's co-creater, thus the mouse's appearence in the picture. And also for those who don't know (which is everyone but my family and Wes), I had a Fievel outfit when I was little that I wore everywhere...basically, An American Tail was what really started my interest in art as a kid. So I frequently use Fievel in the birthday picture, and this year's little joke is a tip-of-the-hat to my childhood Fievel-dressing years. Kashur, however, looks rather akward in that outfit it seems. Poor guy. And don't ask me why he's the same size as a mouse. Suspend your disbelief...it's the magic of cartooning.
