I have always had this weird “gotta feel it” thing when I’m designing characters. I wind up crafting weapons, armor, clothing... partially because I wish I had the prop, and partly because I need to know how it works.

For example, I learned something from walking around in the digitagrade Kamen feet this weekend!
They have to have a waffle when they walk! Because of how the legs work, but also, THE THUMB TOES! They have to walk wide!
I was constantly bumping my toe thumbs together.

man, if I could test out my designs like that I totally would, but I don't have a crafty bone in my body. Like... I can barely sew a pillow. I have to get in touch with my characters by traveling to the places they visit, galloping bareback over hilltops, and martial arts classes. I could never sew a replica of Ben's stupid shirt in a million years, and even in the story it was MaDE bY SOMeone who DOEsn't know how to SEW. Eugh

Lol, at least you have your own way of feeling out the characters.
Also, you have a better natural idea of how clothing is supposed to work than I do... Having to actually make them to know how it should all fit together is terribly inefficient LOL
