I guess this is my interpretation (redesign?) of changelings from MLP.
From the moment they were introduced, changelings were my favorite species in the show. Their designs were so cool. I don't mind the original reformed changeling designs (I'm mostly happy to see them getting the love they deserve) but hey, it's fun to create my own version.

This is meant to be the same changeling individual, born in a malnourished state (that is to say, their egg was laid by an already malnourished Queen) to after they learned to share love (and be given love.) Their main color is blue, though it's harder to tell in the malnourished state. Changelings can come in any hue, but they're always more saturated and iridescent when healthy.

Changeling magic is strong, yet extremely specialized. In fact they can't even do simple spells like levitation in their true form (with the exception of Queens and heirs.) What their magic is able to do however, is allow changelings to shapeshift themselves with precision.

This is no simple illusion magic - when a changeling shapeshifts into a pegasus, both their physical form and magic mimics that of the pegasus (limited by the changeling's own magic strength, admittedly.) Which is how changelings that turn into unicorns can use simple unicorn magic. The main drawback to their shapeshifting, is that it takes a mental effort to craft and maintain the form. Some changelings are better at perfect mimicry, some have better stamina. The most effective are those who can excel in both.

anyways, I had written a whole lot more headcanons from here, but I think I'll save them for another day. It got too wordy.
