Vegetarians generally can eat products from animals; but not their meat. 
There's also a type, I think it's called plantism or something, but it's where people only eat the parts of plants (no animals or products) that the plant can have taken from it without it dieing or being hurt.

That is really interesting and informative, but there are actually differentt types of vegetarians as you, obviously, know.
Ovo-vegetarians, will eat eggs and products from other animals. Most vegetarians fall into that category, so I can see why it is confusing, and vegetarian is often used as an umbrella term. My character, Hypno, falls into the general vegetarian definition because he avoids beef, pork, poultry, sea-food and flesh of any kinds (including eggs). He will, however, digest milk though, which wouldn't make him vegan.
I am really glad you shared that information with me though. You've made me interested in finding out more about the different types of vegetarians in the future.
