Description So tonight my mom and I were looking through some of my old art stuff, deciding what to do with it for when I move out. I discovered two old, beat up notebooks circa 1994 filled to the brim with my doodles from when I was a kid. Most of it was dinosaurs (and a lot of...dinosaurs in bondage...dont ask, I was a strange child) but then I ran across THIS and was hit smack dab in the face with the biggest wave of nostalgia ever. As soon as I saw it I thought "oh my god, that's Eila!"

Eila (pronounced eye-lah) was my first imaginary friend. She stuck around for a good two years or so. She was some kind of crocodile/eel/dinosaur thing that was inspired by a lot of the things that I liked as a kid. It was so weird...upon seeing this silly little doodle I drew when I was four I suddenly remembered everything about her...how she was 'supposed' to look, her personality, voice, whatever. I rushed off to my room to draw it.

So yes, this is what she looked like in my head all those years ago (well okay, not EXACTLY because I obviously didn't have an idea of this kind of style, but you get what I'm saying). I had so many adventures with this thing. She was kind of a motherly figure to me... I assume this was because when I was younger my mom wasn't around much so I really needed something like that. Eila was later replaced with E.T. and Casper the Friendly Ghost as my imaginary BOYfriends, lmao. I was uh... an awesome kid

Normally I wouldn't care, but if y'all could refrain from any comments of the murry purry variety that would be super... many would say something like "this character's like my baby!" but...this one almost feels like a second mother, as weird as that may sound! I'm sure a shrink would have a hay day with me, lol.

YEAH SO. IMAGINARY FRIENDS. If you had one, you should draw it :3

The SAME EXACT THING Happened To Me A While Ago, And My Imaginary Freind Was Babymonster. (Don't Ask, I Was 6, I Couldn't Think Of A Better Name.)
He Was A Sort Of Blobby Little Slime Monster, With Pale Green Slime, And Pale Yellow Eyes That Glowed Gold In The Dark. I Sucked At Drawing Back Then, But Now My Re-Draw Looks Much Better.
I Haven't Posted It Yet, But I Will Eventually.

You WERE an awesome kid. I do believe the best kind of child is one who takes their childhood fantasies with them to adulthood.

I would... but trying to draw him... is difficult when I try to remember details, It fades, and he's still there he wasn't really a friend more than something that I feel has saved my life several times... And he was only there at night, and he scared the crap out of me but I never had the heart to yell, for fear that the only person that seemed to actually listen but never talk back or yell, would leave.

There is the saying: "Artists do not create the characters, rather the characters come to them." And I totally believe this being an imaginative artist myself.

PS. Casper was my imaginary friend too, so you're not alone. XD

When I was a kid my dog was my best friend. So I never really had an imaginary friend. From your comments, I wish I had known when I was a kid. You sound like you were one cool kid.

I used to have an imaginary friend. A lot of the details about its appearance got confused, though, so I'm not really sure what it looked like. TT____TT By the time my imaginary friend phase was past me, I had it in my head that they/it (I called the friend the Little Monsters so I have no idea if there was more than one or what) looked like a dark green triceratops, but my mom said that when I was little I told her they/it looked like a fuzzy, puffy mouse. So I dunno. I feel like I lost a huge chunk of my childhood to forgetfulness. D|

This kind of reminds me of the Ursala's evil eel's from the little mermaid movie. Except, this doesn't look evil, maybe sneaky... Or devious. But not evil.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers their imaginary friends so vividly! Somebody has probably already said this, but she reminds me of Joanna from The Rescuers Down Under! She looks really friendly and maternal. It's so sweet that you put your old drawing as the backdrop too!

Voracious-Hunger [2011-06-11 12:35:37 +0000 UTC]

wow, you had imaginary friends?
were they as vivid as real life people? did you talk to them in real life? or did you just converse in your head?

Did you see Elia walking around the kitchen for example?

I want to know, because my imaginary friends were pretend friends, so they never really had a good touch of realism to them (stupid sense of reality...)

This is partially favorited cause the story behind it. That's pretty awesome... I had an imaginary friend I know, but I have no clue anymore what he looked like. Nor did I ever draw him that I know of. Brings back memories for me though xD Pretty awesome imagination you had and obviously still do

I don't think I ever really had an imaginary friend. If I did, it was Neopets' Hannah (from the Pirate Caves).
I liked her a lot and I sometimes imagined she was there.

I think I didn't need an imaginary friend because I meet this guy in probably kindergarten. We'd go off on "Missions" everyday where we would pretend we were knights and sorcerers. I'd usually do the weapon stuff and some magic while he would do something. I forget now. He's not here anymore because he moved away

We had lots of fun though in our imaginations. Our old park was a spaceship

You know having an imaginary friend I would say is a normal part of anyone's childhood. My imaginary friend was named Johnny. He got mad at me one day, and I never talked to him again.

Oh the years of imaginary friends those were the times. You could talk to yourself and not get weird looks.....yes.

Anyway, such an amazing drawing and a very cool story to go with it!

I had an imaginary friend named Gregory, he was a snail that lived on the windowsill in the kitchen, we often argued because he was so grumpy and mean, safe to say that we had a strained relationship. Dunno what happened to him in the end.

Very awsome. And I'm sorry if this offends you but.....she looks devilishly sexy too. Especially with that....rather seductive look upon her face. Almost as if she's sayin... Or thinkin "Ya wanna play? Don't worry...I don't bite....much."

I had an imaginary dog or two, but the one I remember best was a cross between a stag and a blue heron. He was blue heron marked with feathers, and had wings.

He'd fly after the bus when I went to school. :3

You just became my HERO. I had an imaginary sea dragon-thing called Simon and he'd get me in various troubling situations, like leaving his shoes at home when we went to the movies, and getting in my mom's make up and torturing the cat. Wow. Now I need to draw him.
