Description
Basically, I'm making a papercraft of Valoo, from his SSBB trophy.
So far I've edited and simplified the model, unfolded and done the head. The mouth and especially the spiky teeth like parts were pretty tricky, but from here on in it should all get easier!
(apart from the tail).I'm using 210gsm paper, and I think that was a good choice. It's not too difficult to fold, and it holds its shape well. I'm also trying edge colouring, but I'm not so happy about the results... Basically, the colours of my markers don't match the colours of the textures at all... Is this how it's meant to be, or am I supposed to buy 100 shades of red? :/

ooh, good question. I don't think so... I'm not very good at focusing on big projects.
I haven't done much more than is in the picture, but if you're excited about it I'll try and finish it sometime soon.

Try using colored pencils instead of markers, they tend to work loads better.

Ah, can you recommend any in particular? At first I did just try with some cheap ones, but I found they hardly showed up at all and tended to fray the edges of the paper. :/

The ones I'm using now are "CrazArt"(which is kind of just a random brand I found at Walmart). I use some Crayola too, but I tend to lose them quite a bit
What kind of paper are you using? That may contribute a bit too. I use 32 lb (120 gsm), and they seem to work alright.
If you haven't tried it, it may help to get a lot of lead showing by sharpening them more and using the exposed edge of the lead too.

Normally I use 160gsm, but I was worried about how much support Valoo's neck would need because of the weight of his head, so this is 210gsm.
Actually, I've just tried it on my regular paper, and it seems to work fine. So I guess the paper's the problem...

I think it might be because it's thicker, the layers making up the paper tend to break apart easier. With thinner paper, they're packed tighter, so the edges don't fray.
It's just a guess though
I've always meant to do that with hairspray, to see how the ink reacts, and if it actually helps.

hmm, that sounds plausible! I do have quite a range of papers, I'll probably do some experimenting.
Hairspray sounds interesting... I think I read somewhere that it helps to stop ink from smudging when using inkjet printers, but I've never tried it myself.

so in your opinion, what is the hardest, boxy-shapes, triangular-pointy shapes (like the teeth here) or round shapes, such as the body on pikachu ( [link] ) and the chain chomp. Oh, and which project piece was the hardest out of the ones in your gallery?

hmm, I think pointy shapes are generally the hardest, because it's difficult to hold the tabs right at the bottom. Long thin shapes are a nightmare too, because it's very difficult to hold them whilst the glue dries, so you get inaccuracies and they tend to fall apart easily. Spheres and cubes are usually easy, because there's a lot of space to get at the flaps, and you're less likely to need to use tweezers or cocktail sticks.
The hardest was probably Yeta [link] because it was edited and unfolded seriously badly... I think I'm going to do a better version soon. Apart from that, Valoo is ahaping up to be the hardest just cause it's so much work...

Hmm, well it's always best to go as simple as possible for the first time. Large pieces and not very many pages. It really does get a lot easier with practice, so I'd say slowly work up to more complicated models. ^^

Well, the simplest I've ever made is Globox ([link] ), but if you aren't a Rayman fan then PokΓ©ball Pikachu is also really simple. Also, my Link to the past diorama ([link] ) is just basic geometric shapes.
Of course, could could always dive straight in at the deep end and pick whatever you want, but it might not turn out exactly as expected.
