Description Pseudostoma, the radial zooplankton rulers of the open seas. These soft-bodied creatures are believed to be the most primitive group alive, lacking a gut entirely instead eating with permeable skin and excreting liquid waste through the skin. Pseudostoma movement is more comparable to a cuttlefish fin than a jellyfish bell, waving horizontally rather than pumping vertically. Chemoreceptors along the rim are used to detect chemical signals from phytoplankton, telling the creature to move toward food. Different species specialize for different zones of the ocean and different diets. Specific psuedostoma may feed on only one species of plankton. Most are more generalist and wide spread, usually avoiding competition by niche partitioning.
