“Oh Persia!” Meranda rushed over and leaned into the hippopotas’s side, nearly dizzy with relief that her team-mate was okay. “I just knew you would come back!”

“Meranda, I’m so glad you’re okay!” The hippopotas had a wide smile spreading across her lips, and there were tears of relief in her eyes. “I couldn’t have made it back without Paulie, though. He helped a lot!” Here she turned to smile warmly at the stantler, and the pidove who was hugging him.

“Paulie, Paulie, I missed you so much, I was so worried… I don’t ever want to lose you…” Penumbra was stumbling over her words, so full of emotion.

“Don’t ever worry about me, Pen. I’ll always be alright.” He nuzzled her tenderly.

“You should have seen him, Pen! Holding back the rocks with his mind, blasting the end of the tunnel open. He’s very strong, our Paulie.” Persia nodded.

“And Paulie! Pen has gotten over her fear of heights! Isn’t she just the bravest?” Meranda beamed at the two of them.

While Paulie and Pen settled down to tell each other their adventures, Persia had noticed that Embory had disappeared. She pulled away slightly from Meranda, looking around for the familiar illumise. And when she found her, this time Persia didn’t hesitate, or distance herself.

“Embory, I’m… I’m so sorry. I was so silly before, when we argued… You’re a… really special friend, and I’ve regretted my words for a long time. I’m sorry, so sorry…” Persia hung her head, ashamed at how she had once treated this kind-hearted illumise. But she felt a hand beneath her chin, slowly encouraging her to lift it back up.

“I forgive you, Persia.” Embory smiled, and looked right into the hippopotas’s eyes. Both of their eyes glinted with tears. “I forgive you.”

Paulie (with Penumbra settled comfortably on his head) turned at the sounds of approach, and narrowed his eyes when Devonshire appeared. Shroomsworth was right behind him, and the presence of their Guild Leader helped Paulie relax.

Penumbra on the other hand, leaped off Paulie’s head, and ran full tilt towards the Sableye. She stopped just in front of him, and glared. She lifted a wing and waved it, gesturing towards the stantler and the hippopotas, the general lack of a heatran, and the tunnel through which Persia had dug.

“Just look what we did! They are alive, the heatran is gone, and Persia dug a new tunnel, that she can widen in she needs to.” The pidove stared up at him, as if daring him to contradict her. Today was Penumbra’s day, and she felt that there was nothing she couldn’t do, after everything she’d been through with her friends. Except perhaps learn to fly. Maybe she’d wait for warmer weather to try that…

“What do you want me to say, little bird? Congratulations?” The sableye turned to look over his shoulder, and he gestured to the empty air behind him. “You noticed that I didn’t end up finding any others? Trust me, it wasn’t because I couldn’t find any, or convince anyone to come along…”

The pidove’s face filled with confusion.

“W-Wait, you mean…”

“That I aggravated you to an extent, left you to believe that your friends could possibly be dead? All the while knowing that they, in fact, were merely unconscious, and also being aware of the fact that it was highly likely that the heatran would rise out of the rubble and come looking for me?” Devonshire grinned widely, eliciting a whimper from Paulie, who promptly backed away and joined the other three.

“I don’t understand… Why would you –“ Pen’s words were cut off when the sableye held up a hand.
“If I recall correctly, you seemed certain that if I hadn’t intervened, you would have had things under control. And after I had ‘left’, I remember a certain little individual insisting that she wasn’t weak, nor incapable, and that she would show me.” Devonshire paused, tilting his head as he looked at the pidove. “So, I chose not to intervene anymore, and I watched from the shadows.”

“You… You could have told me that they were alright!” Penumbra ruffled her feathers a little, irritated. Her eyes narrowed.

“Ahh, but, if you had known for certain that they were alive, and trapped between two rock-falls… Would it have distracted you? You needed a clear head, Penumbra, to face the heatran. And so, I withheld that information, so that you would do your best, and not have half your mind on your friends. You were worried enough as it was with two friends…” Devonshire paused. “So, I chose not to burden you with the well-being of two more.”

“I, uhh… Never… Thought about it like that…” She lowered her head, much like Persia had done only a few minutes before. “I’m sorry Sir… I won’t, uhh, talk out of line to you again.” Her head snapped up in surprise, as she heard a rather ominous sounding chuckle come from Devonshire.

“You make a great leader, despite your insecurities. And you are bold and brave despite your size and lack of defense. It’s in your very nature to get aggressive and defensive when your friends are in danger. So, I’m fairly certain that you will snap at me again, pidove, if we’re ever in a situation that threatens the wellbeing of your friends.” Devonshire grinned widely, and his eyes glinted. “In fact, I’m counting on it.”
