They led the residents of Tao through the tunnel, and out into the wider cavern, navigating around the rocks that had been scattered when Paulie had torn down the wall Pyralis had built up. He kept a slow pace, so as not to put any strain on Palette, and also so that those that followed the two Merchant teams were able to keep up. Looking back from time to time, to make sure they weren’t too far ahead of anyone, all of them noticed that many pokemon were exhausted like they themselves were, and there were quite a few sporting injuries too.

Tao Village, as a whole, had been hit hard by Kyurem’s unexpected rampage, and yet, here they all were, Rogues, Rescuers and Merchants alike, helping one another out, watching each other’s backs, putting aside rivalries and doubts, so that everyone could pull through together.

After a time, they found themselves talking with other pokemon – the ones that were right behind them. Paulie, of course, didn’t get much of a chance to speak to them, as he was concentrating on helping Palette along without stumbling. Persia stayed beside him, but Penumbra, Meranda and Embory drifted a little farther back, mingling with others, making new friends. The shellos found a purrloin and a gothorita that had a sense of humour to equal hers, and spent some of the journey telling jokes to Lucian and Abigail, and hearing some of theirs as well. Embory hovered nearby, listening and laughing.

Penumbra had hitched a ride on someone else’s head now. She was perched happily upon the head of a carvnivine, chatting away animatedly, not showing any signs of discomfort as to the height. She talked with Eppie’s companions too, or at least with Splint. For Alec, she sang a sweet little melody, impressed by the way that the young timburr was keeping up without any complaint.

Finally, the cavern became lighter as they neared the end, and the fresh cool wind that blew into the Merchants faces uplifted their spirits. They stopped, and took a moment to look at one another, with weary smiles and tired eyes. Meranda smiled one last time at the two rogues she’d been talking with, before returning to Persia’s side, Embory flitting along next to her. Penumbra jumped off the carnivine’s head, saying goodbye to the three of them. Shroomsworth approached and dipped his head in Varekai and Slow Melody’s direction.

“You’ve done well, all of you. My apologies for what I said earlier in Tao. You have all proved yourselves capable, and I am proud to have you among our ranks.” He smiled warmly. “Rest now, the five of you. You must be exhausted. Have no fear, I will keep an eye on things. We are going to wait until the blizzard dies down a bit before we leave the shelter of the cave. We will not leave without you.” And with this, the breloom withdrew, leaving Slow Melody and Varekai to settle down.

“Hey, s’there room for one more?” Penumbra and Embory turned at the voice, and were delighted to find Jasper slinking up to them, his mismatched eyes bright and alert.

“Yes, of course, darling!” Embory grinned down at him.

“There’s always room for a friend, Jazz,” Penumbra chirped happily.

And so the Slow Melody and Varekai settled down, and nearby, Team KC and Team Psych-Out did likewise. Paulie folded his legs beneath him, and nearby, Persia sank to the ground. Penumbra perched on top of Paulie, fluffing up her wings before lowering her head and closing her eyes. Persia and Embory flopped down beside one another, and Jasper curled up next to Paulie.

And there came a figure making his way through the crowd, followed by another. Their very presence alone seemed to quieten the large gathering of pokemon, and comfort them in some way. Without a word, the tropius and the sawsbuck settled down near the six sleeping pokemon, watching over them with vigilance. The tropius turned to the sawsbuck, with a sweet, kindly smile on her lips.

“They’ve done so well, have they not?”

“Yes,” the Sentinel swept his eyes over the sleeping figures. “They have done very well indeed, Miss Holly.” He turned his gaze onto the tropius. “If you are tired as well, feel free to rest. I will keep watch over them.” And so he did. The Sentinel watched over them all, not closing his own eyes, not welcoming sleep himself. And he stayed for as long as he was needed, rising and heading out just before the stantler and his friend woke. He turned back only once, before he disappeared, to murmur something under his breath.

“Paulie, I am so proud of you, and your friends. You, my son, are stronger than you know.”

And then he was gone, accompanied by shadows. Outside, a break in the cloud cover revealed dim stars that eventually disappeared as the sky lightened. A single ray of light shone from the horizon, glinting off the freshly fallen snow. It was dawn.

A new day had come.

YAY WE DID IT! <3
Yup, after all they've been through, the finally get a rest.
Haha, Paulie is actually so, so tired by now. Well, all of them are, really. they haven't slept for a whole night, at this stage after having really busy/stressful days. Not to mention Paulie got dehydrated in the desert in my E4 story, and almost became lunch for a hungry krookodile... We started this collab with both teams meeting each other at the end of a day, and giving each other gifts. And then it was dark when they headed into Tao, and yeah.

This has been the best, full of ups and downs for our characters, and I like to think that they have all grown stronger and more confident of themselves through all of this. I really hope you enjoyed reading it. Srar did amaing work on the pictures, and came up with a large portion of the plot, as well as writing a bit. She gave me loads of ideas and little things I could add in, so thanks so much Srar. I couldn't have come up with a super fun storyline like this without you!
