16 x 20 painting in acrylicTotem shield of a client's Spirit animals, real and mythical... Jaguar, Hyacinth Macaw, Quetzalcoatl/ feathered serpent, and a garland of rainforest butterflies... Had a great deal of fun though more then a wee bit time consuming painting this very detail intensive piece! It also gave me a whole lot of freedom to be as elaborate as possible with color and design... Call it busy? You betcha!

I love it, except for the fact that you put wings on the Feathered Serpent. I am so sick and tired of seeing artists who thinks that the Feathered Serpent had wings. Has anyone looked at the authentic ancient depictions of it?

This reminds me so much of something very similar in Chinese culture. Four animals assigned to the cardinal directions (Dragon, Bird, White Tiger and Black tortoise) [link] (Chinese_constellation)

Also curious as to whether you or the client know that there is a really strong link to Aztec mythology here (Quetzalcoatl obviously ) but also Itzpapolotl is a goddess who takes the form of a butterfly (she represents the soul all life forms share) and the jaguar is a form chosen by many Aztec deities including Tezcatlipoca (who is a God of many things) and Tepeyollotl (who swallows the Sun every night). Can't think of anything to do with Macaws. Maybe you will say, yes I know this! But maybe you didn't so I thought I'd let you know. I love mythology

Because it was basically a South American rainforest piece and the client wanted a Aztec/ Mayan approach, it just took that direction... Allot of my painting and creating is improvisational... I wanted to give it that cultural connection and this is how it evolved... I didn't plan on any particular deities or anything like that but with what you are pointing out, obviously, it was right on track!
