It's not exactly supposed to make sense without the story that goes along with it.

The lion guards the girl and they represent "light". The boy on the others side represents "Dark". He has a gun, and although he's very obviously pointing it at the girl and the queen of the white chess set, the girl and lion aren't aware of it. Neither is the boy holding the gun. In the black pawns, one is set out of line, stepping forward. He's the threat to the white pawns. And he's the only one aware that the white ones are being attacked by the black ones. So the gun is just to make that threat more obvious in the picture itself. The gun's shadow on the chess board shows the route the black pawn set out of line will take.

I'd put up the story, but it's far from finished, it's very long, and I'm too shy to share it So you may see the scene as you wish!
