It was a frightening thing, looking at the basket in front of her, bent over and on her knees.
Honestly, when it came right down to it, it was hardly her fault. In this day and age, most people weren't killed for things like this.
It wasn't worth it though, even though he'd said it would be. It was hardly satisfying at all. Just messy and tedious.
But people here were morally correct. They couldnt let you get away with something like that. It just didn't work that way.
She turned her head, and her neck cracked. She'd been sitting here for awhile and was getting awful stiff, and thirsty. The little town hadn't had an execution for decades, and the blade needed to be sharpened so a clean cut could be made.
She let out a cough to let the town know she was, in fact, here. People turned and gawked. One little boy who she knew had yet to be taught manners pointed, mouth open. But why bother. She was the only thing up here, if they were looking her way, they could only be looking at one thing.
It was only once. Jesus, what were they staring at.
Finally, the time came. The executioner had his mask on, his face covered like she didn't already know who it was.
"Are you ready?" came a soft question.
She laughed. "I've been waiting for 2 or 3 hours. Get this over with."
The voice rang now. "Do you have any final words?"
She smiled, something eerie. "Of course." She looked right at the gawking boy.
"If I had a chance again, he would have been the one I killed."
A thunk, and then the only sound was a nameless boy whimpering.
