Description This is the WIP of the portrait of the Red Queen (16 pict). The portrait is available here : [link]

I spent approximately 35h on this portrait, these pictures are photos (the last one is the final scan )

I always do as I did for this one : sketch with 2H pencil, then I "colour in" with 2H to 8B pencils (eyes, nose, mouth, face shadows, hair, clothes and background).

Sorry, the quality of the photos is not excellent because there was not enough light in my room x)

I love the last step and the step before that. Its like the how to draw an owl comic. Annnnnnd then you just do some magic and youre done.

How do you get the blending so smooth? A blending stick alone is too choppy and using a tissue doesn't really work either.

Why are so different the penultimate and the last picture? What have you done to get that contrast?

It's just because the penultimate is a photo and the last one is a scan, whose quality is better

I really like your method of drawing. I always just mark out the proportions, then get started, and occasionally I run into a problem I can't fix because I've already drawn it too dark.


I think I may try drawing my portraits using this method. It seems like a really smart way to draw.

Yes I think the sketch is the most important thing... If you get it, you (almost) always manage the portrait But sometimes it's hard to see if the sketch is correct, because without contrasts we don't have the same view of proportions
