170g A4 (cheap schoolpaper quality)

In My last tutorial I felt the need to be very structured and educational. This time I am going to tell you How I draw most of the time. Some of the things Will be the same as the pirate of the caribbean tutorial. But most of it is new.
I try to press My skills to the limit with this photo from Sweeney Todd!

step 1 The same as the pirate. the grid. I do this to save time.
But it takes time to do? You might ask?
It takes more time to get it wrong, erase and remake.
so I see it as an investment.

NEW!
step 2 I ask myself. What is the major thing that makes me want to draw this drawing. The faces is the answer. So I start there! And that was almost the end of this tutorial. The faces took forever to get the way I wanted. And I used the eraser so much that the paper almost teared. But they are the most import things with this picture. And with them Done, they Will give you the strenght to make the rest of the drawing.

New!
Step 3 I draw the rest of Johnny. But you need to notice that I keep all the edges sketchy. This I do to save time. To Put in time into fixing a nice hair now is a waste of time. It would be smudged When you draw the background. And then you have to do it all over again.
If you look closely on the details in johnnys jacket you Will notice some fine lines as a pattern. Why bother drawing them? You draw for your own sake. Never forget that. I know that they are there and Thats the most important.

New!
step 4 the background. When making the background always draw what you see. Dont try to figure out what you are drawing. You should always draw what you see and not what you know. On johnnys leftside there is something under the lamp. I dont know what it is. But if i draw what I see someone Else might see what it is. Dont add details or sharpen the edges it changes the focus. Unless that is your purpose. The text in the background is made by the eraser pen.

New! step 5 finishing touches. Fix the hairs. Details on the dress and hat. Edges between characters and background. Now you make the hairs and details that bind the characters an the background together.

The tools:

2B Mechanical pencil for grids and outlines
6B-9B Cretacolor Monolith Graphite Pencils
dark graphite stick
A package of erasers sharpened in all different shapes
and eraser pen
Blender and cotton sticks.

Took 2 days of work. Around 12+ hours to complete.

I hope you like it!

Your skills are utterly amazing and your tutorials are motivating and inspiring! I think the 'something under the lamp' is a woman in the shade sporting a flattish hat maybe? And I can see the shape of a collar and, where the highlight is maybe the shape of a bust perhaps?
