Beautifully shot, I was quickly browsing through the massive pile-up of dev submissions and this one caught my eye the most. Clearly your objective is proven a success

Great shot, gotta love these kinds of photos with the plain white background. Makes the focus on the object so much stronger and simpler

thank you. I really try hard to get that white space without overdoing the subject matter, its hard and I am still practicing.

...except in life, the hooks don't necessarily come out. They just swell up and hurt.

You're pretty brilliant with lighting. Maybe because you think your not so you work at it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StareDecisis In reply to ConjointTwin [2005-11-06 15:22:32 +0000 UTC]

sometimes hooks dont come out, they are everlasting, but also sometimes the person who hooked you repeatedly fishes for fun and takes the hook out afterwards to see you swim off (happily) miserable.

very good concept(/me prefers conceptual photography)...nothing much to critique other than the focus which has been said earlier...

shashank In reply to shashank [2005-11-05 03:53:51 +0000 UTC]

lol...just a matter of personal choice...i would prefer the whole image to be in focus...to give a really sharp look

I dont see whats really wrong with the focus though!

technoghost [2005-11-03 21:26:59 +0000 UTC]

like everyone else said, very nice concept. i really like the crisp details on the hook itself and as you might know, i'm a sucker for white space so good job man.

thanx, thats very nice of you I really am happy with this one even tho people keep saying its not a great focus! But ah well, cant win em all

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

technoghost In reply to StareDecisis [2005-11-06 06:34:41 +0000 UTC]

well to be honnest, i can see your focus point/zone, which is mainly the bottom half, which i think is just perfect because that's where the message is thus where emphasis needs to be made.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StareDecisis In reply to technoghost [2005-11-06 15:23:07 +0000 UTC]

good, because that is where I wanted the focus

DropKickLippy [2005-11-03 20:15:07 +0000 UTC]

background colour is good, even though the highlights are a bit to big in this one. The concept is great.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StareDecisis In reply to DropKickLippy [2005-11-05 18:09:48 +0000 UTC]

highlights?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DropKickLippy In reply to StareDecisis [2005-11-05 22:52:47 +0000 UTC]

the lighting on the left side of your actual hook is a bit too high... what I meant was reduce the highlights in PS... from what I'm trying to say and what it turns out when I type... big difference ... i lose myself into details

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StareDecisis In reply to DropKickLippy [2005-11-06 00:55:05 +0000 UTC]

thats ok. Thanx for the tip.

xthefaintx [2005-11-03 19:46:54 +0000 UTC]

i like your use of rule of thirds. super awesome.

i know it's really hard with macro (and that AWESOME depth of field... haha), but I think it would be a much stronger shot if all of the hook was as sharp as the one point... just my two cents.

the background is great too... i'm totally loving the plain white on EVERYTHING. i'm actually thinking about buying a 'studio in a box' for macro stuff. have you ever seen one?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StareDecisis In reply to xthefaintx [2005-11-04 01:23:43 +0000 UTC]

yeah a soft box. You can make em as well. With macro it is far too hard to get it all focused, so I mainly tryed to focus just on the one.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xthefaintx In reply to StareDecisis [2005-11-09 19:42:32 +0000 UTC]

i hear ya, that problem always occurs with macro.

yup!

ahailofbullets [2005-11-03 18:38:38 +0000 UTC]

I am also curious as to what the background is.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StareDecisis In reply to ahailofbullets [2005-11-04 01:24:00 +0000 UTC]

wierdly it is just 8.5x 11 gloss photo paper!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ahailofbullets In reply to StareDecisis [2005-11-04 02:19:40 +0000 UTC]

Amazing.. must try that sometime. I'm horrible at lighting though!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StareDecisis In reply to ahailofbullets [2005-11-05 18:08:14 +0000 UTC]

Im very horrible at lighting. So I just used some natural lighting in my kitchen near the window. I then got real close with my cam to take it. When I put it on PS I then messed with the curves and thats how I did it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ahailofbullets In reply to StareDecisis [2005-11-06 00:56:51 +0000 UTC]

Then that's some awesome natural lighting and PS work!

StareDecisis In reply to obsidian-nightfire [2005-11-04 01:24:23 +0000 UTC]

8.5x11 glossy photo paper? Is that a good thing?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

obsidian-nightfire In reply to StareDecisis [2005-11-04 04:27:57 +0000 UTC]

I dont know I just wanted to know because I am always curious as to how people are getting things to look like they are in thin air sora, where the paper and the background is white. yet you can see the hook and blood. I just never knew or know how

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StareDecisis In reply to obsidian-nightfire [2005-11-05 18:07:19 +0000 UTC]

well the white just needs more contrast or really good lighting, I use contrast since my lighting sux.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1
