After the rush of Inktober, it's time to get back to the pencil work I love best. So, while the challenge was going on last month, I had a few commissions to do and a couple of piece for myself.
Star Trek II is my favourite Trek movie of all time and I wanted to do a little tribute to one of the best villains in Trek history - Khan Noonien Singh. If you're a Khan fan then I can thoroughly recommend the 'Eugenics Wars' novels by Greg Cox.
I thought about doing this in colour but realised it would look better in grey scale. Happy with the choice. And yes, when I finished it and looked down at my desk I yelled:
"Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!"
Done with polychromos pencils and built up in layers, utilising my pressure application and layering techniques, the picture consists of 7 colours.
Khan's eyes were done with warm grey 2, warm grey 5 and warm grey 6.
His eyebrows were done with black and warm grey 6 .
His mouth was done with warm grey 2, warm grey 4 and warm grey 5.
His skin was done warm grey 2, warm grey 3, warm grey 4, warm grey 5 and warm grey 6.
His hair was done with warm grey 1, warm grey 2, warm grey 4 and warm grey 5.
The jacket was done with black, warm grey 1, warm grey 3, warm grey 4, warm grey 5 and warm grey 6.
The jewellery was done with black, warm grey 3, warm grey 5 and warm grey 6.
Finally, the cargo bay background was done with black, warm grey 1, warm grey 3, warm grey 4, warm grey 5 and warm grey 6.

Completion time: 36 hours 29 minutes

This is incredible!! I saw it quick and thought someone had just put a filter over it, but looking at it properly it's blowing my mind! I love the attention to detail in his jacket- you really do Khan justice!

Yep, the jacket and hair were the two best bits on this piece.
Have to do Khan justice, can't have a genetically engineered superman out for my blood

"No. No. You can't get away. ...From Hell's heart, I stab at thee! For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee!"

O>O Again I'm stunned! From a first glance, I'd swear that this was a still from the film! Upon closer inspection...I'd STILL swear it was a still. The way you blend all the grey's is awesome!

Now I have to ask: Which one took the most time: The Jacket? or the Background? Cause it's all awesome!!

A true masterpiece!

Best. Villain. Ever!

Of the two, the background because there's more of it and it was a pain to get the reflections just right, so in the end I took a little artistic license with some of it. Explained that to 'xijhm' further down this page

Fun project to do and this one is all mine - yay!!!!!

I'd definitely have to agree. Best. Cillian. Of. ALL. TIME!!!!!

O.o OMG! I didn't realize it was THAT much of a hassle for you! This makes the background even more impressive to me!

It doesn't look out of place to me at all...so YEA for artistic license!

Awesome job!

Cillian - lmao
Another case of DYAC!

Yep, metal reflection, especially when working in greyscale, can be a real pain without making the background seem flat.

I'll be framing this one for my 'art wall' next year.

GRRRR!!! Darn you autocorrect!

Awesome!

"You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous: Never get involved in a land war in Asia! But slightly less well known is this: Never go in against a Sicilian when DEATH is on the line!" (Laughs hysterically for a few moments, then falls down dead.)

Villain. Cillian. Sicilian. It's all the same. LOL!!

Yep, The Eugenics Wars parts 1 and 2 follow the rise and fall of Khan from his childhood through to leaving Earth.
Beautifully ties in real events with the story, throws in a lot of nods to a lot of Trek episodes and films too.
He then wrote another, To Reign In Hell, which covers the years on Ceti Alpha 5.
All great books

xijhm [2017-11-03 13:07:18 +0000 UTC]

the screaming is perfect and I don't even watch star trek XD (I get the ref though, who doesn't)

I stand by my word. I legit thought this was a screen shot. as usual. but with closer inspection, I know it's not (actually, this one was a bit easier to tell. looks like you had frustrations with the blur AND metal shine).

once again, keep goin' dude

Starfire-Productions In reply to xijhm [2017-11-03 13:21:18 +0000 UTC]

That scream has become one of those things that's got into public consciousness.
Try being in a cinema full of Trek fans watching this film and the thunderous yell of 400+ nerds at the same time. Scared the hell out of the staff at our local cinema

The cargo bay background was a bit of a pain and I tried several greys that just weren't cutting it so it was a case of use what you got and take your best shot. The lighting in the film is kept quite dark and the colour tones are washed out for these scenes so translating that to greyscale took a little creative work to just remove some of the detailing - hence the blur.

I think favourite parts for me were Khan's hair and clothing. Lots of detailing and washes there.

xijhm In reply to Starfire-Productions [2017-11-03 13:44:12 +0000 UTC]

you know what? I agree. besides, who needs frickin FNAF when we have enthusiastic nerds?

dear god, no frickin wonder! metal is easier to SCULPT than what you where dealing with D8
like, holy crap, dude. bear in mind you're getting this from someone who has cross drilled and riveted metal structures. I figured that was the case but I did NOT realize it was that bad

actually those are some neat details. so I'm inclined to agree

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Starfire-Productions In reply to xijhm [2017-11-03 14:18:31 +0000 UTC]

Never underestimate the power of the nerd side
We actually caused a security alert at London Film And Comic-Con when our team did our group picture and everyone ran over to take photos.

Lol. I have 6 warm greys, 6 cold greys, Payne's grey, dark sepia, black, white, ivory and cream for greyscale work.
With pressure application techniques you can get about 5 ranges of colour from each grey. So even with 65 grey shades at my disposal it just wasn't getting the job done.
So, artistic license taken with the 'contents of these cargo bays to sustain us'

That jacket was a lot of fun!
